MONROE OUTDOORS by Terry W. Johnson
Reporter
Deadline for Monroe Co. quota dove hunt is Aug. 15

increasingly difficult. (Photo/Terry Johnson)
O ver the years,
one of the
many things
experience has
taught me is time does
seem to move along
at a faster pace as
we mature. I was
recently reminded
of this sobering
realization while
thumbing through
a copy of the 2022
Georgia Hunt
ing Regulations
Guide and found
that the dead
line for applying
for a quota dove hunt on
the Rum Creek Wildlife
Management Area is just a
few days away. If you are
like me, dove hunting is not
one of the things you have
been thinking about lately.
If you want to submit an
application to take part in a
quota dove hunt on Monroe
County s own Rum Creek
WM A, you must submit
your application electroni
cally at GoOutdoorsGeor-
gia.com. Once there, select
Quota Hunts and complete
the application process.
Up to five hunters are per
mitted to apply on a single
application. The names of
the lucky hunters that will be
granted permits to take part
in these hunts
will be drawn
from the pool of
applications re
ceived by 11:59
p.m. Aug. 15.
As has been
the case for
many years,
the first two
Saturdays
of the dove
season are
designated as
quota hunts. This year the
dates of these two events
are Sept. 3 and 10. Only 75
hunters will be chosen to
participate in each hunt. In
2021,618 hunters applied
for the coveted 150 permits.
The demand for quota
dove hunts has prompted
the Game Management Sec
tion to schedule them on 14
other wildlife management
areas this year. If you would
like to experience a quota
managed hunt on another
wildlife management area
scattered across the state
now is the time to do so.
Information regarding the
locations of these WMAs
and quota hunts offered on
each can be found on page
72 of the 2022-23 edition of
the Georgia Department of
Natural Resources’ Hunting
Regulations Guide.
The WMA situated closest
to Monroe County is Clybel.
This WMA is located near
the small town of Mansfield.
A quota dove hunt for 200
hunters will take place there
Sept. 3.
Should you have trouble
with the application process,
do not hesitate to call 1-800-
366-2661.
If you have never par
ticipated in a quota dove
hunt, you ought to try one.
As Tina Johnson, Assistant
Chief of Game Manage
ment, put it, “Quota hunts,
which cap the number of
hunters that can participate,
provide a great way to take
part in a limited opportunity
high-quality experience.”
All of these hunts are
held on fields specifically
managed for doves by the
Game Management Section.
Consequently, they are
planted in a variety of grain
crops known to be attractive
to this popular game bird.
If you would like to take
a peek at the Rum Creek
WMA dove field, it is
located at the junction of
Juliette and Holly Grove
Roads. Once you reach this
intersection turn on to Holly
Grove Road. Once on Holly
Grove you will immediately
spot the field.
Questions regarding the
dove field should be directed
to the Region III Game
Management Office (1-706-
595-4222).
With each passing year,
the average dove hunter is
finding it increasingly more
difficult to find a spot to
hunt this fast-flying game
bird. One of the reasons for
this is that most folks do not
own or lease their own dove
field. Thus, if they want to
hunt doves they must be in
vited to a private dove hunt
or seek out a commercial
dove field. Fortunately, for
all of us, the Game Manage
ment Section is now trying
to remedy this problem
by developing dove fields
throughout the Peach State.
If you decide to take part
in a quota dove hunt this
year, you will find that our
hunter dollars are being well
spent.

The Annual Community Unity Event was back at
Kynette Park on Saturday and Sunday, July 23-24 hosted
by Monroe County native Jon Clawd and friends. There
was a car show organized by the STR Car Club of Forsyth
and the focus was on cars from Macon, Atlanta, Griffin,
McDonough, Jackson, Woodbury, Forsyth, and other
locations.
There was also a 3 on 3 basketball tournament, a trap
golf, and a corn hole tournament. A live showcase featured
artists from Macon, Atlanta, and Forsyth. Throughout the
weekend there were bounce houses for the kids and free
food, drinks and activity.
Clawd said the weekends events were all about the kids
and they were committed to having safe, responsible fun.
He estimated around a thousand guests were at the park
on Saturday. Sponsors of the event included A Bag of
Trip Productions, Shoes on Deck, BE Kool & Conquer,
GMR, Flavorz Eatery, Defy the Odds, Bozeeks Fresh
Catch, GFM, Dj ShowOut, My Dudes First Tee, and South
Express Towing.
