Forsyth’s Grogan sings
Anthem for Braves
In the 1918 World Series
Babe Ruth was present
when the national an
them was sung during the
seventh inning stretch in a
game between the Boston
Red Sox and the Chicago
Cubs. From then on, the
Star-Spangled Banner has
been played or performed
for thousands of sporting
events every year ranging
from high school basketball
games to college football
games and of course at
major league baseball
games. Games like the one
on Tuesday night when the
2nd place Atlanta Braves
faced off against the 3rd
place Philadelphia Phillies
and Steve Grogan, local
singer, had the honor of
performing our national
anthem.
Grogan has performed at
the Braves stadium for the
last 14 years with a group
of coworkers from Delta
Airlines, but this game was
the first time he performed
solo singing Capella high
tenor. He got the gig after
auditioning for the Braves
and competing against at
least 20 other singers.
He does a lot of singing
locally with his two-mem
ber group, The Neighbors,
with guitarist Charlie Gil
bert playing at places like
Sol Tacos & Tequila, The
Pickled Okra, and Fox City
Brewery. He also sings two
services on Sundays with
the music team at the Mo
mentum Christian Church
in Forsyth. As his day job,
he has worked for Delta for

35 years.
He moved to Monroe
County from McDonough
five years ago with his wife
Angie who works at GP-

Bazemore: Brace for
an economic slump
BAZEMORE
By Will Davis
publisher™ my mcr.net
Long-time
Forsyth banker
Bill Bazemore
urged local
business owners
to be prepared
for a recession
as he surveyed
the economy in
a speech to the
Forsyth-Kiwanis
Club on Tues
day, July 26.
The former
owner of Mon
roe County Bank and now
a consultant, Bazemore
has given regular talks
to Kiwanians about the
economy and inflation for
nearly 20 years.
Bazemore showed the lat
est trends in inflation, sav
ings rates, mortgage rates
and housing prices, and
encouraged members to
make up their own minds
about what might happen
next.
“I’ve never been a good
forecaster,” said Bazemore.
But Bazemore did say
the bill is coming due for
the COVID spending
that Congress
pumped into the
economy starting
in 2020.
“No one can
believe ... that
when you infuse
money into an
economy, there’s
not going to be
a consequence,”
said Bazemore.
“It’s always
negative. There’s
always a price to
pay at a later date.”
And the data appears to
show that price is a reces
sion. A recession is defined
as two consecutive quarters
of negative growth. Two
days after Bazemore’s talk,
the government confirmed
a second straight quarter of
negative growth, confirm
ing the country is in a
recession.
Bazemore said for all the
talk blaming economic
woes on Russia and Putin,
it is U.S. government
spending that is the main
cause of inflation.
“Putin has nothing to do
with shocking the system
with money’ said Baze
more. “That’s a greater force
than all the geo-political
factors you can name.”
Bazemore said the data
show that prices are high,
personal savings is low,
income is high, unemploy
ment is low and interest
rates are rising. But the best
predictor of a recession,
said Bazemore, is what’s
called the yield curve. This
compares the return an
investor would get on a
10-year treasury note vs. a
2-year note. Normally the
10-year investment will
have a better return than a
2-year one. But when the
2-year has a better return
than the 10-year note, that’s
called an inversion. Every
time the 2-year return has
outperformed the 10-year
return since 1955, it’s been
followed by a recession.
And yes, the yield curve
has just inverted in both
March and June.
The usually unflappable
Bazemore flashed some
rare frustration with po
litical leaders who say the
inflation is temporary.
“It’s not transitory, you
idiot!” said Bazemore.
Bazemore noted that
large companies like
Walmart are announcing
that they are slowing down
hiring efforts. He said the
next step is they begin
layoffs.
“That should give you
some pause,” said Baze
more, noting that other
companies will soon follow.
“We have a herd mentality’
Bazemore encouraged
business owners to evalu
ate their employees and
determine who the most
valuable ones in the event
they have to cut back. He
said owners should plan
what to do if their revenues
went down 20 percent.
“If you do that,” said
Bazemore, “you’ll weather
this. This too will pass.”
