PASTOR S CORNER by Rev. Scott Chewning
Spotlight on Local Churches
He opens our eyes to
sin and comforts us
I n the last article, we discussed the first
Beatitude and what it means to be
blessed and to be poor in spirit. The
reason for it being first, is that it must
be first. There must be a recognition and
an understanding that as a human being,
we are spiritually bankrupt before the Holy
God.
This recognition of
spiritual bankruptcy must
happen, for those that
recognize this are members
of the kingdom of heaven.
They are those who abide
in Christ. The proud are
opposed by God, but the
humble, those who are poor
in spirit, they are the ones
who know their sustenance
comes from and is sustained
by, Jesus Christ, and they
long for Him. They are also
the ones who can now walk
in the light of verse 4.
Here we have the next
characteristic of a disciple.
Matthew 5:4 (ESV) Blessed are those who
mourn, for they shall be comforted.
How is it that the disciple of Jesus Christ
is happy while mourning? The word trans
lated as mourn, is in no way a surface-type
issue. It is a soul-tearing grief. The type of
grief that can turn to an outward lament,
and it refers here in this verse to that type
of mourning over sin.
It refers to the grief of sin in your life
as an individual, in your family, in your
church body, and in the society around
you.. .but it starts with you. We see this as
Paul shows us in Romans 7:24 Wretched
man that I am! Who will deliver me from
this body of death?
Isaiah pronounces a curse upon himself
in recognition of sin against the backdrop
of the holiness of God. Isaiah 6:5 And I
said: “Woe is me! Fori am lost; for I am
a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the
midst of a people of unclean lips; for my
eyes have seen the King, the LORD of
hosts!”
It is a grief and mourning over sin be
cause we now see the offense our sin has
to a perfect, righteous, and Holy God. We
see sin for what it is and it grieves us. If it
does not grieve us, then we are not poor in
spirit and we certainly haven’t had our eyes
opened to see even a glimpse of the glory
of God. Which leads me to the following
question...
How exactly is one
comforted while mourn
ing? It sounds quite
terrible-this grief about
sin both in the individual
and in others.. .how is
one to be comforted and
blessed in this despair?
Two reasons, first, the
God who saves is the
God who has opened
spiritual eyes to sin, and
second, He is also the
God of comfort.
To have eyes opened to
the truth of sin is to be
one who has been saved
from the consequences of that sin. There
is no greater comfort than that. It is proof
that you belong to the One who saves.
The God of comfort grants rest to those
whom He has saved and revealed such
truth. Only those who mourn over sin, not
simply the consequences of it, can belong
to the King. What rest and comfort there is
to be had in Christ.
Believer, rest in Christ Jesus - He has
done what is required to pay the debt for
your sin. Unbeliever, rim to Christ Jesus.
He is the Savior of all those who would
believe in Him. Throw yourself upon Him.
Trust in Him for salvation. Believe in Him;
Salvation is found in Christ alone, soli deo
Gloria. [To God alone be glory]
