BENSON
Continued from Front
convicted of all counts and
given consecutive sen
tences, he would face 220
years in prison. If he’s found
guilty of the first count of
sexual assault against a
person under his care, he
would be a registered sex
offender the rest of his life.
Adams said Benson was
exchanging sexual photos
and videos with an under
age female band student
and enticing her to engage
in sexually explicit conduct
to produce such visual im
ages between August 2020
and December 2021. The
girl was 15 and 16 during
that time.
Adams, a former MP
band parent himself, said
Benson had been groom
ing the victim since middle
school. He said while they
found more grooming-type
conversations on Benson’s
phone, there was nothing
else that was considered
illegal. He said Benson’s
computer is still at the
crime lab but said they de
cided to move forward and
not wait for investigators to
finish. He said if they find
anything else, they can add
charges later.
Adams said Benson
would take pairs of girls out
to eat as he groomed them.
Adams said while Benson
seemed to be moving the
victim toward a physical
relationship, they have no
evidence it ever moved
beyond a virtual explicit
relationship over their
phones.
The investigation started
after a friend of the victim
told her parents about
the messages, which were
swapped over texts and In-
stagram chat, said Adams.
The parents then notified
the sheriff’s office.
Adams said investiga
tors checked to make sure
there were no other victims
from Benson’s time as
band director at Tattnall
Square Academy before
he returned to MP, or as a
church worship leader at
Mt. Zion UMC in Smarr.
Benson was also the MCMS
band director for one year
before being named the MP
band director in 2019.
Benson graduated in
2014 from the University of
Georgia where he marched
in the Redcoat Band and
before that graduated from
Mary Persons in 2008.
Benson was engaged to be
married but the Reporter
learned that the nuptials
were cancelled. Benson was
released from the Monroe
County Jail on a $12,000
bond. As part of Benson’s
bond he cannot contact
minors, the victim or be on
school property.
