Desp/fe shutout, Nelson
says sky is not falling
By Will Davis

Mary Persons head coach
Brian Nelson says the sky
is not falling despite a 48-0
scrimmage loss to Houston
County on Friday.
Nelson said different
coaches approach scrim
mages different ways, and
he approached Fridays
scrimmage as a practice
to get better more than a
game to win. In the past
MP has scrimmaged weak
er opponents like South-
west-Macon. But this year
the Bulldogs scrimmaged
Class AAAAAA Houston
County at Freedom Field in
Warner Robins. While it’s
not time to panic, Nelson
said the scrimmage did
expose areas MP needs to
work on.
“We still have to get better
on the offensive line,” said
Nelson.
While Houston County
was 4-7 last year, Nelson
said the team has good
skill players and a strong
secondary. And like most
teams, said Nelson, their
offense and defensive lines
were bigger than MP.
“It seems like everybody
is bigger than us,” said
Nelson.
Nelson said the Bulldogs
didn’t perform very well
overall. But he said they
will get better, hopefully
in time to compete better
against Northeast when
they square off at Mercer
on Saturday.
Nelson said MP is work
ing on getting better as it
enters the non-region part
of the schedule, hoping
they’ll be playing much
better when they begin
region play in October.
Northeast scrimmaged
Westside on Friday and like
MP was also shutout, 28-0.
Theb Class AA Raiders
went 9-4,4-2 region (plac
ing 2nd) in 2021. They are
coached by Jeremy Wig
gins, who led the Raiders
to the playoffs in his first
two seasons as head coach
(2020 and 2021). While
they had a stunning 2021
season, their lead tackier,
lead scorer, and lead rusher
all graduated in 2022. The
Bulldogs and Raiders have
clashed 6 times and the
series is tied 3-3. The last
time they met was in 2007.
The Bulldogs are looking
for their first win at Mercer
having lost to Houston
County and a young QB
named Jake Fromm and to
Lee County. See more in
the MP Football Preview in
this edition.

MP Bass Team needs boats, captains
The 2022-23 Mary
Persons Bass Dawgs are
preparing to launch this
year’s tournament season
and are looking for men
and women who have a
boat and would be inter
ested in being a captain
for the Mary Persons Bass
Fishing Team. Boat cap
tains for the High School
fishing team are a vital part
of the success of the team.
The role of volunteer boat
captains is to take a pair
of student anglers fishing
for both practice and on
tournament weekends,
teaching them fishing
techniques and strategies
and promoting the sport of
fishing. Some of the lakes
we fish through the year are
West Point, Lake Seminole,
Lake Oconee, Lake Lanier,
and Lake Hartwell. There
is also a state championship
tournament at the end of
the season. High School
Bass fishing has taken off
in the past few years and
opportunities are available
for student anglers to earn
college scholarships.
If you are interested in
helping student anglers, are
over 21, can pass a back
ground check, have a reli
able fishing boat, and can
donate a few weekends to
encourage students in the
pursuit of being successful
anglers, call Mark McCoy,
the High School Fishing
Coach, at (770)714-0198 or
email him at mark.mccoy@
mcschools.org. You can
also visit their Facebook
page “MP Bass Dawgs
Fishing”.
Fishing team tryouts for
students will be held in
September after Captains
have been secured.
The Mary Persons bass
team has grown in its first
few years of competition.
But they need more boats
and captains if they hope to
continue growing.
Miller, we are proud
of you! Keep working
hard! Go Bulldogs!
Love,
Dad, Mom, Mitchell
& Michael
