INCIDENT REPORTS . August 17, 2022
The following incidents were reported by the Forsyth Police Department
and the Monroe County Sheriffs Office.
Mich, man passing in emer
gency lane found to be DUI
A 2022 Chevrolet Silverado was
passing vehicles in the emer
gency lane at a high rate of speed
on Aug. 5 and the 50-year-old
Alpena, Mich, driver was arrested
for DUI by Cpl. Jaleel Brown who
saw him run off the road near
North Lee Street while doing 97
mph.
Brown made a driver side ap
proach at the stop and spoke with
the driver who was wearing con
struction work attire. The man
reeked of alcohol and was very
lethargic. His eyes were relaxed,
and he couldn’t stop moving
around unnecessarily so Brown
had him step out. Brown then
noticed a nearly empty bottle of
Captain Morgan in the driver
door pocket and poured out the
remaining liquor. After running
his license, Brown learned it was
suspended for several reasons
and that he was wanted by
Michigan authorities for indecent
exposure. He told Brown he was
only going 80 miles per hour, but
the corporal assured him he was
doing 97 in a 70-mph zone.
He agreed to and failed a sobri
ety test. He refused to submit to a
blood test and was then cited for
failure to maintain lane, speed
ing, open container, driving while
license suspended, and DUI-
refusal.
Driver says alcohol smell is
from cooking ingredient
Deputy Justyn Weaver spotted a
Dodge Ram 1500 speeding at 96
mph on 1-75 S near the weigh sta
tion on Aug. 6 and after the stop
took the driver to jail for DUI.
The man could only produce
his name and date of birth when
Weaver asked for his license.
After running his information,
the deputy learned the driver had
a suspended license and had him
step out of the vehicle.
Weaver could smell alcohol on
the man who told him he had
been cooking fish at a family re
union and had used alcohol as an
ingredient. After failing a sobriety
test, he was cited and taken to the
Monroe County Detention Cen
ter for driving while license sus
pended, DUI, speeding, and seat
belt. The Ram was turned over to
a licensed and sober driver.
Man allegedly pulls
out woman's hair
A woman on Hunter Street re
ported to officer Dexter McCune
on Aug. 7 around 3:12 a.m. that a
man had assaulted her and pulled
out the hair on the left side of her
head. There were two witnesses
to the incident but wished to stay
anonymous. The upset woman
told McCune she feared for her
life and gave him an address on
Freeman Street where she said
the man lived. McCune went to
the home with Sgt. David Asbell
but had no success in finding the
man. A warrant for assault and
battery was obtained.
Drunk driver runs Johnston-
ville Road stop sign, causes
2-car crash
A drunk driver from Riverdale
failed to stop at the stop sign
at the southbound 1-75 exit of
Johnstonville Road on Aug. 8 and
went to jail for DUI and other
charges after causing a two-vehi
cle crash. Deputy Charles Bryson
and Sgt. Todd Haskins responded
to the accident and found the
25-year-old male driver of a
2004 Inftniti and a female driver
from Barnesville in her 2018 Jeep
Compass both with minor inju
ries and EMS was requested.
The deputies noticed skid
marks on the exit ramp around
75 to 80 feet before the stop sign
on the ramp at its intersection
with Johnstonville Road. The
skid marks continued past the
stop sign and into the west bound
lane of Johnstonville Road to the
impact area of the crash.
Haskins spoke with the man in
the Inftniti and noticed alcohol
on his breath. The man denied
drinking but agreed to a sobriety
test. He had a positive reading on
a portable breath test and an open
bottle of Jack Daniels American
Honey Whiskey was in the right
rear floorboard of the vehicle.
The driver was handcuffed,
taken to jail, and charged with
DUI-refusal, open container, and
failure to stop at a stop sign.
No free lunch for
shoplifting couple
A man in a red Chevrolet truck
at the Ingles Gas Station on Tift
College Drive on Aug. 8 admitted
to officer Richard Maddox that
he had just shoplifted 2 Pow-
erade drinks and a lemon pepper
chicken from Ingles. After he was
arrested, his female passenger
admitted she was with him when
he took the items and was also
handcuffed and placed in a patrol
car.
The manager of Ingles provided
Maddox with a receipt totaling
$11.64 for the shoplifted items
and video footage of the theft.
Semi driver arrested for DUI
A tractor-trailer was stopped
in the right northbound lane of
Cabaniss Road on Aug. 9 around
9:30 a.m. and officer Richard
Maddox found the motor run
ning but saw no driver in the cab.
He knocked on the drivers door
and on the side of the sleeper but
got no answer. After about 5 min
utes of banging, Maddox went
inside the Royal Seven Travel
Center and checked all businesses
searching for the driver.
He then returned to the semi
and again knocked loudly until
the driver finally emerged from
the sleeper area and sat down in
the drivers seat. Maddox could
smell marijuana after instructing
him to roll down the window.
He also noticed his reactions
were slow and his speech had a
slight slur. He handed the officer
a Florida drivers license, and he
was asked to step out and walk to
the rear of the vehicle. His eyes
were glassy and bloodshot, and
his pupils were enlarged.
Maddox asked him when
was the last time he smoked
marijuana, and the man told him
around 3 a.m. when he left with
his semi. He admitted that there
was marijuana in a black bag by
his seat which Maddox located.
After running his information,
the officer found the man had a
suspended license for child sup
port obligations. He was arrested
for driving without a license and
DUI then taken to the Monroe
County Jail and turned over to
jail personnel.
Slow driver popped
formethand DUI
A red 2018 Nissan Frontier was
doing only 55 mph in the far-left
lane of 1-75 N near Johnstonville
Road on Aug. 10 and after a stop
by deputy Christopher Marsh
the 26-year-old male driver from
Gainesville went to jail on a DUI,
drug, and weapons charge.
When Marsh got behind the
pickup and turned on his emer
gency lights, the driver immedi
ately slammed on his brakes and
pulled over to the left shoulder in
an abrupt manner. The unshirted
man was shaking from nervous
ness as the deputy asked for his
license and couldn’t easily find
his license, his insurance card
or registration. He appeared to
Marsh to be under the influence
of a drug due to his dilated pupils,
grinding of his teeth and sweating
profusely. He was asked to step
out of the vehicle.

The driver agreed to a sobriety
test which he failed but denied
drinking or taking drugs. He also
said there was nothing illegal in
his pickup, but a gram of suspect
ed methamphetamine was found
inside a Grizzly Wintergreen
chewing tobacco can stashed
inside the driver’s door pocket.
There was also a loaded Heritage
Rough Rider .22 caliber revolver
in the glove box. The man was
then handcuffed.
He was taken to the hospital to
have blood drawn and then to the
Monroe County Jail where he was
booked for methamphetamine
possession, DUI, and possession
of a firearm during the commis
sion of a felony.
Intoxicated man thanks
deputy for his service
A 54-year-old Bethlehem
man went to jail on DUI related
charges after he was stopped for
speeding in a darkly tinted 2013
Mercedes Benz near the weigh
station on 1-75 S by deputy Justyn
Weaver on Aug. 11. Weaver could
smell alcohol as he approached
the vehicle, but the driver, who
rolled down his window only
three inches, twice denied con
suming alcoholic beverages. He
told Weaver that his mother and
father were arguing in Hilton
Head Island, and he was trying to
get to their hotel.
The deputy requested the man
to exit and stand at the rear of
his vehicle and after nearly two
minutes of him asking why he
was being asked to step out he
finally complied and admitted to
having an “after dinner beer”. He
was very talkative but appeared
to be having trouble answering
direct questions. After failing a
roadside sobriety test, he refused
both breath and blood testing.
Three cold margarita cans
were found in the passenger side
floorboard with one opened and
consumed. The man was then
cuffed, and while being taken to
jail, he continued saying how he
just needed to get to the motel
room.
He was cited with DUI-refusal,
