Forsyth-Monroe County
Chamber of Commerce
sponsored a ribbon cutting
for Marcescent Healthcare
Services at 211 Tiff Col
lege Drive, Suite 203 on
Thursday, Aug. 18. Marc
escent Healthcare Services
provides home nursing
services at both the skilled
(RN and LPN) level and
the unskilled level (PCAs,
companion sitters and
weekend sitters). Marces
cent is owned and operated
by Monroe County natives
Janice Slaughter and San
dra Epps.
Marcescent serves six
counties: Monroe, Jones,
Jasper, Butts, Lamar and
Crawford. It answers
the needs of clients and
families whether the need
is on-going or temporary. It
can provide a sitter when a
regular caregiver has to be
away or just needs a day or
a weekend respite. Skilled
services include wound
care, bagging, assessment,
etc. Personal care services
can include doing laundry,
preparing meals, being a
companion or whatever the
client needs.
Slaughter and Epps, who
are sisters-in-law, saw the
need for the services in
2019 and began working
on the business. They got
their business license in
August 2020 and continued
to work toward finding the
right location and the right
employees and becoming
certified. They expect to be
able to accept medicaid in
about 30 days.
They chose the name
“Marcescent,” which is a
botanical term for leaves
or fronds that wither but
remain attached to the
stem, because they think
of their clients as persistent
flowers and also because
they wished to honor Epps’
son, Marquis, who died in
a vehicle accident on Nov.
14,2018.
Both Slaughter and Epps
have backgrounds in home
healthcare. Slaughter said
they are a family-owned,
faith based business with
the priority of taking good
care of both the client and
their loved ones.
“We want them to know
they are putting their loved
one in good hands,” said
Slaughter.
Marcescent chose the lion
and the lamb lying together
as its logo to illustrate the
peace it wants to bring to
clients and families. Other
family members who
are assisting Marcescent
Healthcare Services in vari
ous ways include Kenneth
Slaughter, Janices husband
and Sandras brother;
Henry Slaughter, San
dras brother and Janices
brother-in-law; and Briana
Epps, Sandras daughter
and Janices niece.

Former Georgia Gov.
Sonny Perdue will be the
special guest speaker at
the Fall Sports Sunday at
Forsyth United Method
ist Church at 9 a.m. this
Sunday, Aug. 28.
Perdue, who became
chancellor of the Univer
sity System of Georgia in
March, is a Middle Georgia
native who played foot
ball for the University of
Georgia before becoming
a veterinarian. He made
outdoor sports like fishing
a big priority when he was
governor from 2003-2011.
“Were real excited,” said
church pastor, the Rev. Billy
Beard. Beard said Perdue,
who often talks about how
sports and his faith have
influenced his life, is the
perfect speaker for their
annual Sunday kickoff to
the fall sports season.
“We know how impor
tant sports and football are
to Forsyth. And we really
like to take one Sunday out
of the year and celebrate
with them and pray for
them and ask God to keep
them safe.”
Beard said Forsyth is such
an MP football town that
the city just seems more
upbeat when the Bulldogs
are doing well. Beard said
they’ve invited MP coach
Brian Nelson and his team
to Sunday’s service. While
Nelson cannot force players
to attend, he has gotten the
word out that they are wel
come. Participants in other
fall sports and activities
including band are invited
too, said Beard.
Perdue was the first Re
publican governor of Geor
gia since 1872. He later
served as U.S. Secretary of
Agriculture for President
Trump from 2017-21.

When he was governor,
Perdue won funding to
renovate the abandoned
Tiff College in Forsyth to
make it the headquarters
for the state Department
of Corrections. He also se
cured funding to build the
Go Fish Education Center
in Perry.

served in the legislature,
Cole was Perdue’s floor
leader and helped shepherd
funding for Tiff and other
Gov. Perdue priorities.
“Sonny truly is a godly
