AT&T retail store coming to Forsyth
By Diane Glidewell
news@mymcr.net
Forsyth will have a brick
and mortar AT&T store in
the future. It will be a new
building at the corner of N.
Lee Street and Russell Park
way, with its entrance on
N. Lee St. The AT&T retail
store will share a parking
lot with the new Popeyes
Restaurant.
The site plans were ap
proved by Forsyth Plan
ning & Zoning/Design &
Review on Aug. 15. Allen
Shackelford of the engi
neering group presented
the plans and answered
questions. He represents
both Popeyes and AT&T
as tenants of the buildings.
The Popeyes building is
2,354 sq. ft. Its building is
nearing completion. The
proposed AT&T building is
1,600 sq.ft.
City ordinances require
one parking space for every
125 sq. ft. of restaurant
space, which means Pop-
eyes requires 18 parking
spaces. The AT&T retail
building will require five
spaces. The parking lot is
designed with 27 spaces
plus four handicapped
spaces, exceeding the com
bined total for Popeyes and
AT&T.
Planning & Zoning chair
Steve Coleman said Shack
elford met with the city of
Forsyth department heads
in a First Step meeting and
followed the guidelines
given him.
Shackelford said he also
met with Walmart repre
sentatives to satisfy any
concerns they might have.
Some of the parking spaces
were re-arranged with
plans for how customers
and employees of the two
businesses will park. He
said Popeyes anticipates to
normally have six to seven
employees, although it will
have 12 employees when
it opens initially to handle
extra business and keep
things running smoothly.
AT&T plans to normally
have only one employee at
its store.
Shackelford said that 75
percent of Popeyes busi
ness is now drive-through.
A small dining room and
a double drive-through
anticipates this business
model.
“My only concern is the
view of the building from
Russell Parkway, where
the back of the building is
elevated,” said Coleman.
“I want the view from the
road to be as nice as pos
sible.”
Shackelford said the
back of the building has no
windows and one service
door. There are windows

bottom, Russell Parkway to right.
AT&T stand-alone retail store in Perry
on the other three sides.
The dumpster pad, which
serves both businesses,
is enclosed. Regarding
landscaping, he said the
northeast corner of the
property is heavily wooded
and will remain so. The
steep hillside, about a 20’
elevation, was mowed
about three weeks ago. The
plan is to hydro-seed it.
“It will look good,” said
Shackelford. “We need to
tidy up a lot of underbrush,
but were not going to
touch the existing eleva
tion.
Coleman asked if AT &T
will be applying for a vari
ance for a sign. Popeyes
was approved for a pole
sign. Shackelford didn’t
know but didn’t think
signage was significant to
AT&T since pulling traffic
off the interstate isn’t im
portant to its business.
The AT&T building de
sign was approved unani
mously by the Planning &
Zoning Commission, with
Coleman and members
Martin Presley, Hal Clarke
and Philllip English voting
and member Kathy Row
land absent. Approval from
city council isn’t needed for
review of site plans.
Asked about potential
opening dates for the busi
nesses, Shackelford said he
didn’t know as the tenants
control when to open. He
said Popeyes may wait as it
trains personnel and finish
es other operational details
even though the building is
ready. He said there is still
a shortage of materials that
may affect construction of
the AT&T building.
