Evelyn Bugg is Everyday Hero, history volunteer
By Steve Reece

Since 1899 the Forsyth
Train Passenger Depot has
been standing proudly at
the railroad crossing on
Tift College Drive. It is a
beautiful brick building
that now
houses the
Monroe
County
Historical
Society Mu
seum and
Archives.
Volunteers
maintain the
depot and
two other historic buildings
along the railroad tracks.
One such volunteer is Ev
elyn Bugg who joined the
society over 10 years ago
and works at the museum
greeting visitors every
Wednesday.
Just after joining the soci
ety, Evelyn started working
on a Monroe County burial
index, tediously going
through old books, obitu
aries, and funeral home
records and hand typing
nearly 14,000 entries in a
ledger that makes it easy
to find the grave of anyone
buried in
our county.
Evelyn
was born
in Thom-
asville
and after
graduating
from high
school she
enrolled in
Valdosta State University
to study secretarial admin
istration. While there she
met her future husband,
Edward, who was studying
sociology and psychol
ogy at Georgia Southern.
He was a friend of her
roommates boyfriend and
needed a date. Her room
mate talked her into going
to a drive-in movie with
him and they eventually
engaged. Evelyn said she
has no earthly idea what
movie was playing that
night.
She incurred a large sum
of student debt during her
time at college but was
determined to not get mar
ried until it was paid. So,
she returned to Thomas-
ville and worked for a year
she did exactly that. Ed
ward and Evelyn were then
married for over 51 years
until his passing in 2020.
They had two daughters,
Melanie and Melissa, and
two grandchildren.
In 1969, Edward got a job
as a diagnostic coordinator
at the Georgia Diagnos
tic Center while Evelyn
found employment at Tift
College as secretary to the
academic dean for 17 years

She then went to GPSTC
doing administrative duties
for 16 years.
When asked for advice
to give to young people,
Evelyn said, "Talk to your
grandparents. Talk to your
parents. Ask questions.
Ask them about what
they did when they were
young. Where they lived.
How many brothers and
sisters do they have? Simple
things to learn your roots
so you've got a foundation
to build on if you're ever
interested in finding out
where you came from."
