By Steve Reece

Two people were injured
on Friday afternoon after
being struck by a hit and
run driver who was racing
to beat a train on Hwy. 41 at
Bunn Road.
The suspect fled south in
a white sedan around 4:27
p.m. According to the sher
iff’s report, Tammy Terell
Jester, 44, of Forsyth told
deputy Christopher Marsh
she was traveling north on
Hwy 41 N. and when she
came to the intersection of
Bunn Road, the sedan sped
through two stop signs and
past the railroad crossing
that had lowered arms. She
said the driver rushed to
beat the train and her 2015
Nissan Sentra was struck in
the middle of the passenger
side, disabling the vehicle.
The driver of the sedan then
sped away. Jester and her
passenger, Tyrone Cham
bliss, 52, were both taken to
the Monroe County Hospi
tal by EMS.
Anyone who saw anything
is asked to call the sheriff’s
office at 994-7048.

Hickman sets record,
Scandrett hurts knee
Mary Persons senior quarterback Logan Hickman
completed 17 of 29 passes for 3 touchdowns
and 250 yards on Friday, breaking the school s
all-time career passing record of 4,769 yards set
in 2018 by J.T. Hartage. Hickman also has no in
terceptions on the year. It was a bright spot in an
otherwise tough loss to defending state champ
Trinity Christian 31 -20. MP also suffered some
injuries, including junior defensive lineman DeZa-
vion Scandrett, right, who dislocated his knee.
He’ll be out at least 4 weeks. See full coverage in

Move over!
Deputy, dog
struck by
18 wheeler
A Monroe County
Sheriff’s sergeant and his
patrol dog “Zibi” narrow
ly escaped injuries when
his marked Chevrolet
Tahoe was sideswiped by
an 18-wheeler on Thurs
day, Sept. 1.
According to the ac
cident report, Sgt. Kevin
Williams was working a
vehicle accident on 1-75
just north of Rumble
Road when the accident
happened. The driver of
the semi, Robert Benja
min Shettles of Counce,
Term., came over the top
of the hill and slammed
on the brakes when he
saw the accident. Shettles
couldn’t slow in time and
the semi slid into the side
of Williams’s vehicle while
he was sitting inside. His
K-9 “Zibi” was in his cage
in the backseat.
On Friday, the sheriff s
office posted on Face-
book that the Move Over
Law requires drivers
approaching a stationary
emergency or mainte
nance vehicle with flash
ing lights to move to the
adjacent lane and slow
down. Failure to comply
could result in a fine.

The driver of a rental car
crashed into two vehicles
during a chase with a Mon
roe County deputy and
was captured after he ran
on foot behind Shoney s on
Harold G. Clarke Pkwy on
Aug. 31.
According to the sheriff s
report, deputy Anthony
“Rock” Thompson spotted
a black 2021 Dodge Char
ger following too closely
in the middle lane of 1-75
south near the weigh sta
tion and made a stop near
milepost 189. Thompson
noticed that the driver,
Clarence Avery James, 24,
of Flowery Branch, put his
car in reverse as he ap
proached the vehicle on the
passenger side.
Thompson asked James
if the vehicle belonged to
him, and he said that it was
a rental. When the deputy
looked at his license, he
instantly knew it was fake
and asked for his last name
and date of birth.
James answered his last
name was “Sage” and gave
Thompson a different
birthdate than the one on
the fake license.
The Charger s motor was
still running and in reverse,
so Thompson asked him
to shut it off. James com
plied and Thompson then
confronted him about the
license, but James contin
ued to insist it was real.
Thompson told him the
license didn’t even have a
hologram and to step out
and meet him at the rear of
his vehicle.
James then placed his foot
on the brake and reached
for the start button.
Thompson shouted, “Don’t
do it, bud! I’m telling you,
don’t do it!” James instead
pushed the start button, put
the Charger in drive, and
punched the accelerator
pedal.
Thompson then drew
his pistol and fired a single
round into the Dodgers
right rear tire and ran
back to his patrol vehicle
