countys black schools to consolidate
and merge into one school.
When MC schools integrated in
1970, Hubbard became an elemen
tary school. Professor Samuel Hub
bard retired that year, but his legacy
remains with the school (and alumni
association) named in his honor.
By the 1910 s, MC rural schools be
gan to merge and the smaller schools
closed. In 1916, the county had 36
schools - both Black and White. (36
seems like a lot. Remember, most
people walked to school, possibly
rode a horse. So, they couldn’t travel
far, meaning schools were in almost
every community. Also, until 1920
when Lamar County formed, MC
was larger in area.)
One of those schools was the
Bolingbroke School, located where
United Bank and Harveys Plumbing
now stand. A 1916 survey lists one
teacher, 32 students (average atten
dance was 25 per day - farm duties
often called), in eight grades.
The Bolingbroke School closed in
1939. Students were sent to Banks
Stephens Grammar School; most of
them took the train up to Forsyth.
Note - T.G. Scott’s grandson, also
named T.G. Scott, was superinten
dent of MC schools in the 1960’s.
The above information was pro
vided by:
- Dr. Priscilla Doster, Chairman
of the MC Board of Education, who
presented a talk to the Bolingbroke
Community Club.
- Monroe County, Georgia - A His
tory, 1979; 2nd Printing 1998.
