Rebecca Headley became
the new coordinator of For
syth Main Street on July 22,
coming to the role just in
time to coordinate the last
Summer Concert on the
Square for 2022 on Aug. 6.
As Main Street coordinator
she is responsible for plan
ning, organizing and all the
details of bringing special
events to the city
Events are a part of the
mission of Main Street,
which is part of Main Street
America, a program of the
National Trust for Historic
Preservation. Its purpose
is to develop and encour
age prosperous downtowns
and, through downtowns,
vibrant communities.
Rebecca said she loves the
small town feel of Forsyth
and enjoys planning event;
she feels like the job is a
perfect fit for her. She said
she is excited to build the
relationships that are an
important part of Forsyth
Main Street.
She moved to Barnes-
ville when she was 14 and
began attending Monroe
Academy in Forsyth. She
was a member of Monroe
Academy’s last graduat
ing class in 2009, which
included 32 graduates, and
said the school was a close
knit family. Rebecca has
continued to live in Barnes-
ville. She and her husband,
David, have two children,
ages 8 and 6. Rebecca also
has two step children, ages
18 and 15. Her life is very
family-oriented. She enjoys
being involved with her
childrens various sports
activities, although the lo
gistics of multiple children
playing different sports
at different venues can be
challenging.
“We are usually at church
or on a ballfield,” she said.
The family also enjoys
going to the beach, hiking
and everything outside.
Rebecca comes to Forsyth
Main Street from four
years working for the city
of Griffin as superinten
dent of Oak Hill Cemetery.
Oak Hill is a large (125
acres), historic cemetery,
but much of her job there
involved working closely
with people at very stress
ful times in their lives. She
worked with those bury
ing loved ones and with
those planning their own
funerals.
“You have to read people
quickly, but I enjoyed doing
that,” she said. “I got close
to family members.”
She worked closely with
funeral homes, sold plots
and monuments, marked
plots, helped people locate
graves and supervised a
crew of three inmates who
maintained the cemetery
grounds.
She is looking forward to
using her organizational
and interpersonal skills as
Main Street coordinator.
After the Swingin’ Medal
lions’ concert on Aug. 6,
Rebecca Headley
Rebecca’s quick start con
tinued with the unexpected
opportunity to host the At
lanta Braves’ World Series
trophy on Aug. 17. She said
that event went well with
over 600 people attending,
compared to an average of
about 300 people at most of
the trophy’s 151 stops.
Events for the remainder
of2022 are planned and
she will be seeing that they
go smoothly as attendance
and enthusiasm continues
to rebound after the shut
downs and cut-backs of
the pandemic. The Forsyth
Farmers Market contin
ues each Friday through
October. The community
yard sale will be Saturday,
Oct. 1, with a few additions
like baked goods and a
face-painting booth supple
menting the traditional
vendors.
Trick-or-Treating on the
Square will be on Monday,
Oct. 31. She is working on
a Scarecrow contest dur
ing October. Then comes
the Fighting of Forsyth’s
Christmas Tree and the
Forsyth Monroe County
Chamber of Commerce
Hometown Holidays
Parade. Finally, there is
Forsyth’s New Year’s Eve
celebration.
Rebecca said she is devel
oping some new ideas to
add to Forsyth’s activities
for 2023. She wants to add
some events that spe
cifically target children, to
encourage them to develop
special memories of their
hometown. She said volun
teers are always welcome to
help with the many aspects
of events.
The Forsyth Main Street
coordinator is also re
sponsible for promoting
downtown merchants,
including shopping, dining
and entertainment, and
their contributions to qual
ity of life. The facade grant
program and assistance in
obtaining other grants are
part of this. She uses Main
Street’s social media to pro
mote downtown businesses
as well as doing so by
speaking and coordinating
with organizations, groups
and schools.
