and the Monroe County Sheriffs Office.
Previously married couple
jailed after hotel fight
Cpl. Kimberly Barnett respond
ed to Americas Best Value Inn on
North Frontage Road regarding a
domestic dispute and a man and
his ex-wife were taken to jail on
Aug. 26.
The man who was outside at
the hotel when Barnett arrived
told her that he and his ex-wife
got into an argument about him
wanting to leave the room. He
said when he tried to walk out,
she shoved him from behind
knocking him to the ground and
causing him to cut his arm on
the brown bench that was at the
foot of the bed. When he tried to
get up she was on his back and
placed her arm across the back
of his neck to keep him on the
ground. He said that he had to
fight with her to get up off the
ground. Barnett noticed the man
smelled strongly of an alcoholic
beverage.
Barnett then went to the mans
room, but no one would answer
her knocking. She then went back
to her vehicle where officer Mad
dox was talking with the man.
While standing with them the
corporal saw the room door open
and the woman step out.
Barnett returned to the room,
got the womans information then
asked her to tell her what hap
pened.
She responded that she and
her ex-husband had gotten into
a fight, and he had punched her
in her left eye. She pointed to her
eye, and Barnett could see that
it was very red and had begun
swelling. When asked what they
were fighting over, the woman
explained that she had her
father on speaker phone and her
ex-husband began calling him
names and this made her upset.
The argument then turned to him
wanting to leave, but she said he
had been drinking that morn
ing and didn’t want him to leave.
When she got up to block the
door, he fell to the floor. She said
once he got up, he walked over to
her and grabbed her.
When Barnett asked her to
describe how he grabbed her,
and she answered she didn’t want
him to go to jail. Barnett asked
her several more times, but she
wouldn’t reply. The corporal told
her that she should tell her side of
the story because he was claim
ing that she pushed him to the
ground and held him there by
his neck. She said again that she
didn’t want him arrested.
Barnett then went outside to
speak with Maddox who was
asking the man to give a breath
test. Barnett saw marks on the
man’s neck, as well as a cut to his
left arm that was still bleeding
and some redness to his face. The
woman had redness and swelling
to her left eye and a cut on her
chest that was bleeding.
Barnett charged them both with
family violence battery. Maddox
also charged the man with DUI.
The woman told Barnett she
needed someone to care for her
dog and Monroe County Animal
Control was called to secure the
dog until she could get out of jail
or have a family member pick
him up.
As Maddox was leaving to
take the woman to jail, the hotel
owner approached him and said
he didn’t want her back on the
property and she was also issued
a criminal trespass warning.
Two men argue over a few
slices of bread, one charged
A James Street man was cited
with disorderly conduct after a
fight over a sandwich on Aug.
26. Officer Richard Maddox
responded to a dispute at a home
on James Street and spoke with
a man who said an argument
started over a few slices of bread
that he took for a sandwich. He
said after making the sandwich
and leaving the home, another
man pushed him down the steps
causing him to nearly fall, and
his sandwich got thrown into the
road.
The other man admitted to the
shoving and was cited for disor
derly conduct. He was released
with a court date.
FedEx driver jailed for
reckless driving
A FedEx truck driver was ar
rested for reckless driving around
1 a.m. on Aug. 26. Deputy Joshua
Warren saw a FedEx tractor-
trailer going around a curve near
milepost 180 on 1-75 S and nearly
roll over after the driver swerved
across lanes. Warren was on call
at the time, taking a woman to
her vehicle and was unable to
make a stop. He continued be
hind the semi for around 2 miles
and saw it fail to maintain lane
around 6 more times.
The driver swerved off the road
and onto the shoulder around
3 times and swerved into the
middle lane 3 times, almost strik
ing other vehicles.
A few moments later, Warren
arrived at the woman’s car and
after leaving her, was able to catch
up to the truck at milepost 13 on
1-475 S and made the stop.
The driver did not appear to be
under the influence and denied
talking on the phone or being
distracted. He was arrested and
taken to jail.
Man just out of jail
returns for shoplifting
Employees at the Dollar Gen
eral on East Main Street called
police on Aug. 27 regarding a
shoplifting in progress and a man
recently released from jail was
arrested. A female cashier told
officer Richard Maddox that a
man came into the store between
3 and 4 p.m. and was found in
the back storage room hiding in
a corner.
When asked about being in
employee area the man told the
employee that he lost his black
bookbag with blue strings on the
front. He was told to leave the
storage room and he made his
way out of the store without the
backpack. The employee later
found the backpack hidden on
an aisle, on a shelf behind other
merchandise, which contained
a $5 price tag that had been
removed from backpack, and 2
queen sheet sets valued at $23.50
each. She told Maddox the man
came back in shortly before she
called dispatch and asked if she
had seen his backpack because
he had left it. He then went to the
back of the store to find it.
Cpl. Kimberly Barnett and
Maddox spoke with the man as
he was walking to the front of
the store, and he told them he
hadn’t done anything, and he was
leaving. Maddox then handcuffed
him, placed him in the rear of his
patrol car; the man began plead
ing not to take him to jail because
he just got out from doing 10
months, but Maddox took him to
the Monroe County Jail anyway.
