Larry Ardell DeFore
June 10, 1941 - September 3, 2022
Larry Ardell DeFore passed away on
Saturday, Sept. 3,2022. The funeral ser
vice was held Tuesday, Sept. 6 at Martha
Bowman Memorial United Methodist
Church. Reverend Mark Magoni offici
ated. The private graveside service was
held on Monday, Sept. 5.
Larry was born in Macon on June 10,
1941, the son of the late Ardell and Stella (McElheney)
Defore. Larry graduated from Lanier High School.
He served in the Air National Guard, retired from 3M
Company, and retired with the state of Georgia. He was a
longtime, active member of Martha Bowman Memorial
United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee.
He was also a member of the Nan Freeman Sunday
School Class, and a founding member of the ROMEOs.
Larry was pre-deceased by his sister Carol Baldwin. He
is survived by his beloved wife of over 58 years, Peggy
Martin DeFore, and their daughter Lorry Turner and
son-in-law Jeff Turner of Roopville, Ga„ and his four
grandchildren: MaryLeith Turner of Maryville, Tennes
see, Parks Turner (Abigail) of Rome, Ga„ Zebulun Turner,
and Arden Turner.
Larry participated as a member of the Woodworkers’
Association of Middle Georgia. He enjoyed spending
time in his shop (making furniture, pens, and bowls),
fishing, rabbit hunting, and spending time with his family
and friends.

Betty Jo Smith
March 14, 1943 - August 29, 2022
Services were held for Betty Jo Smith at
11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 1,2022 at Rest Haven
Cemetery, 525 Hwy. 83 South, Forsyth,
Georgia 31029. Reverend Rufus J. What
ley officiated.
Freeman Funeral Home had charge of
arrangements.
Earnest James Brown
May 13, 1959 - August 24, 2022
Homegoing Services for Earnest Brown
were held on Saturday, Sept. 3,2022 at
Tessie Hall Baptist Church, 320 Boxankle
Road, Forsyth, Georgia 31029. Reverend
T.O. Sams was the Pastor and Reverend
Rufus J. Whatley was the Eulogist.

Julia Waldrep Stevens
August 2, 1934 - August 17, 2022
Julia Stanford Waldrep Stevens, age 88,
was born in Forsyth on Aug. 2,1934. She
passed away from complications related
to dementia/Alzheimer s on Wednesday
Aug. 17,2022 while residing in Virginia.
Julia was widowed in 2015, after a 59
year happy marriage to James P. “Steve”
Stevens. She resided in LaMesa, Calif,
from 1956 through 2018. Julia had an amazing nursing
career for over 48 years at Mercy Hospital in San Diego,
Calif. A trailblazer, Julia completed her nursing degree
at a time when not all women thought about going into
the professional workforce. She worked as an Operating
Room nurse; for many years was the OR Supervisor com
pleting work schedules and operating budgets. She was
very active in the Association of Operating Room Nurses
and held several leadership positions in the San Diego
Chapter of the AORN.
Julia was strong in her faith; she was a founding charter
member of her church since 1962; San Carlos United
Methodist Church in San Diego. She actively attended
and volunteered until her move to Virginia. After leaving
California, she continued to attend her church by stream
ing the services online.
Julia and Steve loved to sail in San Diego Bay, she was an
avid reader, enjoyed a good Scrabble game, and spent her
vacations always visiting family. She loved attending fam
ily reunions, and gatherings with her Mary Persons class
of 1952. She lovingly cared for her husband Steve for years
during his long illness, always a caregiver.
Julia is survived by a loving family including her sis
ter, Nancy Waldrep Fussell and her husband Jackie of
Broxton, Ga.; nephew Justin Fussell and his son Jackson
of Columbus; nephew Mike and his wife Linda Estes of
Griffin, Georgia; great nephew Curtis Estes and his wife
Erin, great nieces Jennifer Garcia and Amy Brown all of
Georgia.
Also missing Julia is daughter Susan Stevens Crosby
and her husband Louis of Goose Creek, S.C.; grandchild
Gregory Artman and his wife Mary of Texas; grandchild
Christina Artman and her children Abigail and Emma of
West Virginia.
She will also be dearly missed by daughter, Mary Kate
Stammetti, and her husband Vince of Centreville, Va.;
grandson Kevin Stammetti and his wife Evan Northup of
Washington D.C. Julia is also survived by sisters-in-law
Nita Offerman, and Kathy Fluty of Arizona and Joanne
Stevens of New Hampshire and their families. Many cous
ins will also be missing Julia.
Julia was preceded in death by both parents, Stanford
Alexis Waldrep and Julia Reeves Waldrep; husband James
P. “Steve” Stevens; sister Sarilois Estes and brother-in-law
Gene Estes; and nephew Brett Fussell.
A memorial service and celebration of Julias life well
lived was held Saturday, Sept. 10,2022 at 11 a.m. at Mon
roe County Memorial Chapel, 86 W Main Street, Forsyth,
Georgia 31029. A visitation preceded the service at 10
a.m.

Frances Whitehead Sparks
September 6, 1932 - September 1, 2022
Frances Elizabeth Whitehead Sparks of Forsyth went
to her heavenly home on Thursday, Sept. 1,2022. Fu
neral services were held at 2 p.m„ Sunday, Sept. 4,2022
at Monroe County Memorial Chapel with visitation one
hour prior to the service. Interment followed in Monroe
Memorial Gardens. Rev. Steve Whitehead and Rev. Da
mon Fountain officiated.
Mrs. Sparks, the daughter of the late David and Donie
Whitehead, was born Sept. 6,1932 in Webster County,
Ga. Her husband of 59 years, Edward Sparks, her grand
daughter, Leigh Jenkins, her five brothers, Quincy White-
head, Warren Whitehead, Adolph Whitehead, James
Whitehead, Ralph Whitehead and her two sisters, Helen
Whitehead Fountain and Pauline Whitehead Branch
preceded her in death. She retired from William Carter
Company after 40 years of service and worked for Pride
Craft Company for 5 years. She enjoyed spending time
with her family. One of her greatest joys was being Maw
Maw to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She
will be greatly missed.
Survivors include her daughter, Paula (Kenneth) Jenkins
of Forsyth; son, Buddy (Cherilynn) Sparks of Forsyth;
grandchildren: Stan (Rene) Jenkins, Amanda (T.J.) Riley,
Landon (Kelley) Sparks, Kyle (Leslie) Sparks, Jackson
Sparks all of Forsyth, GA; great-grandchildren, Julia
Jenkins, Ryan Jenkins, Andon Riley, Ava Riley, Cameron
Sparks, Laney Sparks, Tennyson Sparks, Kane Sparks all
of Forsyth; sister, Cleo Cowin; brother, Eugene (Nancy)
Whitehead; sisters-in-law, Helen Granade and Josie
Sparks; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
