PASTOR’S CORNER by Rev. MarilynTucker-Marek
Spotlight on Local Churches
Practice gratitude daily,
especially to our God
T he letter to the congregation of
Colossae says, “And let the peace
of Christ rule in your hearts, to
which indeed you were called in
the one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the
word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach
and admonish one another in all
wisdom; and with gratitude in
your hearts sing psalms, hymns,
and spiritual songs to God.
17 And whatever you do, in word
or deed, do everything in the
name of the Lord Jesus, giving
thanks to God the Father through
him.” (Colossians 3:15-17)
Thanks or gratitude appears in
each of these three verses.
First, the Colossians receive the
excellent life advice to “be thank
ful.” Cultivating the habit of thank
fulness changes ones entire outlook on life.
True thanks comes from a place of honesty.
Compliments and flattery may come from a
place of comparison or the desire to gain favor,
but honest thanks moves a relationship from
the transactional level of quid pro quo to a
place of genuine connection.
Consider how you feel when you receive an
unexpected thank you note. For me, such a
note has the power to change both how I see
myself and how I see the one who sent it.
Second, the letter instructs the congregation
to sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to
God “with gratitude.” We have many reasons
to give thanks to God. By rooting our songs
and prayers to God in gratitude, we remind
ourselves of Gods power, root our relationship
with God in trust, and balance our prayers of
intercession with prayers of thanksgiving. This
helps us pray the words of Christ, “thy will be
done.”
Third, the letter urges the faithful to con
nect all their actions with a thankful attitude.
“Do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks to God the Father through
him.” How would your choices change if every
action you took had the motive of
gratitude behind it?
Of course, to have gratitude spilling
out of every word and deed, it helps
if we are already in good habits of
saying thank you. Here are some
suggestions:
What acts of care or support do
you take for granted? How might you
start saying thank you?
At the end of your day, list all of the
things from the day for which you are
grateful.
For every prayer in which you
ask God for something, also thank God for
something. Try getting just as specific with
your thanks as you do with your request. See
how saying thank you to God changes how
you make your requests of God.
Cultivating the spiritual practice, the faith
habit, of gratitude helps us follow the same
advice the Colossians received, “whatever
you do, in word or deed, do everything in the
name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God
the Father through him.”

syth Presbyterian Church, 63 N. Jackson Street.

Dental bus

helping people for about 25 years, continu
ing to grow over the years. She said it got
started when a doctor in Warner Robins,
who came to the U.S. from Cuba as a child,
saw the need. Gill recently moved from
Columbus to Florida but continues to work
with the Georgia ministry because of the
blessings she sees.
McCoy said the mobile dental clinic will
come to any community where a church
sponsor requests it, but weeks in 2023 are
already filling up. He said the clinic is still
catching up from its limited activity during
the pandemic.
Buff said there is always a need for dental
care, but with the rising cost of living dental
care is way down the list for people who
don’t have dental insurance or money for
other than necessities.
“They come [seeking help from Circle of
Care] when they’re miserable,” she said. “I’m
excited we could get help.”
She said several local dentists work with
Circle of Care to provide help for those in
need with the resources Circle of Care has.
One of the patients the mobile dental clinic
was able to serve is a favorite volunteer at
the Thrift Store.
Buff noted that Circle of Care always wel
comes volunteers at the Thrift Store, even
for a couple of hours per week. People are
needed to help organize donations and dis
play them in the areas for purchase and are
welcome to work in whichever area catches
their interest, from kitchen items to clothing
or furniture. All purchases from Circle of
Care go toward helping local individuals.
First Baptist of Forsyth hopes to bring the
mobile dental clinic back next year. McCoy
said it is usually easier to plan for a second
visit after getting everything in place for
the first one. A sampling of patients who
benefited from the clinic’s 2022 visit gave it
top reviews.
Where do the two Georgia Baptist Mission
Board mobile dental clinic buses go at the
end of the day when they finish a mission?
They are kept at Camp Kaleo, which is
owned by the Mission Board, in southern
Monroe County, where a shelter has been
built for them. McCoy said the central
location makes it a good starting point for
serving the whole state.
