Life as an 8th grader
Every day I wake up
around 5:45.1 rub the
sleepiness from my eyes,
sometimes a bit uneager to
start the day Reluctantly, I
get dressed, eat breakfast,
tie my shoes, pack my after
school bags, and hop in
the car. With my sister (5th
grade), brother (sopho
more), and 80s on 8 in
the background, our car is
pretty noisy. I get dropped
off at Monroe County
Middle School first.
I head to my first class,
social studies.. .my favorite.
One of my best friends who
sits next to me reminds me
of any homework we had
the night before, which
results in me scrambling
to get it done in the 20 or
so minutes we have for
homeroom. Class starts,
and we typically take notes,
do reading worksheets, or
do flexible groups. The bell
rings.
Next class.
Second period, ELA. I sit
in the back of the room,
which I'm fine with. It's
funny how many times
people rearrange their hair,
or how many silent conver
sations can be held across
a classroom. We usually do
group discussion, group
worksheets, or partner
work. My favorite days are
library days, because I have
at least 15 minutes to read.
The bell rings. Next class.
Choir class is an interest
ing class. Sometimes we
sing, sometimes we play
Just Dance, sometimes we
do group work. It's a fun
class, especially because of
the people in it. We usually
always end up being a little
too loud from the various
things we can start laugh
ing about. Then the bell
rings.
Next class. Math.
This is not my strong suit;
let's say algebra usually gets
the better of me. Around
15 minutes into class, we
go to lunch. Lunch is one
of the only times you get to
freely talk to your friends.
Everyone talks, everyone
laughs. I lucked up with my
lunch class this year; most
of my friends are in it with
me. After lunch, my friend
Emerson and I clean the
tables. We mainly do this
so we can be a few minutes
late to class. At least I do.
After enduring the grueling
70 minute math class, the
bell rings.
Next class. Science.
Our science teacher, Mrs.
Pippin, is hard on us. I like
it though. We usually do
hands-on experiments,
guided notes, partner work,
or review games. One time
she lit a ping pong ball on
fire. It was really funny. I'm
usually tired around this
class, as it's my last one of
the day. I either chew gum
or drink ice water to make
sure I don't fall asleep. Our
teacher tells us to pack up
for our 15-minute break in
the cafeteria. I stand and
talk with my friends, or buy
candy from the school store
until it ends. The bell rings,
school is over.
I change for cheer prac
tice in the locker room. We
run a few laps, work on
stunts, re-space the cheer
lines, and practice a few
cheers. The clock strikes 5;
I rush to the locker room
and change clothes.
We drive to tumbling
class, where I condition,
work on back handspring
drills, stretch, and practice.
The clock strikes 6:30.1
rush to the bathroom and
change for dance class.
A quick stop at the local
Quik-Trip is a must do. A
large Diet Coke and some
gummies are a necessity. I
finish homework while I
wait for class to start.
Since today is Monday, I
have a pre point. We work
on foot strength, ankle
strength, and flexibility
needed to get us on point.
At 7:30,1 walk to my car. I
go home, shower, get my
room tidy, pick out my out
fit, finish homework, watch
netflix, and end my day by
reading. I go to sleep, ready
to wake up and do it again
tomorrow.
It’s Back to School Time
By Marlee Berlin
It’s back to school time
Time for the journey to start once again
It's back to school time
Time to hang out with your friends
Talking and laughing all morning long
It masks the school hours like a hazy fog
Packing school lunches all day and night
Trying on outfits till they feel just right
It’s back to school time
Time for the school year to once again take flight
It back to school time
Time for staying up all night long
It back to school time
Double check if your answers are wrong
That dreaded feeling when passing out tests
That anxiety that fills you till you have no more breath
“Participate”, “raise your hand” they all say
That moment your heart skips a beat cause you have
nothing to say
Oh the homework, it piles up more and more
That feeling you just want to sink into the floor
Running on a couple hours of sleep
Those circles under yours eyes they’re hard not to see
It’s back to school time
180 days till summer we meet
It’s back to school time
“Raise your hand”, “stay in your seat”
How did we go from independent and free to this in one
week
“You can’t use the bathroom”, “Line up in a single file.”
But hey we all struggle through it with a shining smile
I totally failed that test
Do you know if they’re mad at me
The overthinking consumes you until you can’t breath
The need to feel perfect
90 isn’t good enough
Study and study until you’ve had enough
It’s back to school time
It’s all super fun right?
It’s back to school time
Time for faking sick and counting the days
It’s back to school time
That mystery meat smell that just can’t stay away
The freezing cold kids begging for just one break
A breath of fresh air from this place is all it would take
Project on project until you mind explodes
But hey at least your friends are there with you when
you implode
The laughing and snacking in the back of the class
“Hey do I see a non-clear glass”
It’s back to school time
And we’re all here for the ride
Best friends make life fun
100 percent smart like Grayson but
that’s fine because I'm not either.
We both hang out a ton and like to
compete in challenges to see who’s
better. I think I connect with him
more because we’re both the same
size and height.
We often get on calls and play call
of duty and have a ton of fun playing
it. I don’t remember a time when he
and I haven’t done anything togeth
er. We’ve both done robotics and
band, watch the same shows, and do
projects together.
things around
us. He’d do
anything stupid
to get the best
laughs out of
me and Cam
den. We like
to send each
other stupid
stuff from our
phones, and I
die of laughter
every night.
Camden,Cam
for short, Isn’t
By Ethan Williams
My name is Ethan, Ethan Wil
liams, and my best friends are Gray
son Bellwin and Camden Walker;
we all attend Monroe County
Middle School. I’ve know both of
them half my life and I treat them
like my brothers.
They both mean the world to me.
We all make the same choices to
gether. For example, we all chose to
play middle school football together.
We like to spend time together at
our houses, like playing video games
and swimming. All of us have
computers so we all like to play
games after practice.We all make
fun of each other, even if it’s a
girl we all like. In the end we all
support each other for anything,
we’d take bullets for each other.
Grayson, Gray is what I like
to call him, is the smartest
kid I know, he makes 100’s on
everything and always gets in
the smart groups.Grayson also
knows a ton of history. He is also
funny; everything he says some
one gets a laugh out of it.He is
smart but he does the stupidest

Monster Prom
The Perfect Autumn
By Benjamin Chase
A monstrous dance
Where nightmares
pranced
And skeletons skullked
The living dead
By the others pantsed
The sight of which
Scared me half to death
And that horrid witch
Who nearly killed me
With her odorous breath
And then there was
The fearsome Franken
stein
Who feasted all the while
Who ate enough for 10
men
Then ate the men besides
But when the sphinx
She sauntered in
And gave a fearsome roar
That crooked witch she
cast a jinx
And the sphinx roared no
more
And then the mummies
Tumbled in
And started up a band
They then played a lively
jig
The greatest in all the
land
By Anna Barrett
The super sweet smells
of candy on Halloween
night. Hearing fallen leaves
crunch under foot like a
bunch of nuts. Cheering
louder than a lawn mower
at football games. Laughing
around the table with fam
ily and friends. Everyone
says go big or gourd home.
Carving some pretty
scary Jack-o-lanterns. The
bag full of candy was a ton.
People say eat, drink and
be scary. The trees have
spooky faces. Little kids
running around saying
don’t be a scaredy cat.
Ghost dancing like it’s Boo-
Gie time.
Eating some crunchy
caramel candy. The wind
howled at a chilly football
game. You're as happy as
a clam when you're eating
Thanksgiving dinner. The
falling leaves are prettier
than a sunset. Going to bed
knowing that you had the
perfect autumn.
