Coachs daughter says football is a family affair
M y name is Kate
Nelson, and I am
an eighth grader
at Monroe County
Middle School. My favorite part
about the fall season are all the
sports that go on.
My most favorite sport is foot
ball. I love watching football, it's
just so interesting. My dad is also
the head football coach for our
high school, Mary Persons, and I
absolutely love going to the games
and watching our players do what
they love.
My favorite game is our rival,
Jackson. That game is probably
the most intense, nerve wracking
game because both teams come
back for redemption. My favorite
part out of all this is the band and
run-through signs made by the
cheerleaders.
Football has been in my family
since day one. Most of the men
in my family have played foot
ball and are now coaching on a
football team. I grew up going
to football games every Friday
night, or every other Saturday
for a college game. All my fam
ily talks about is football, all the
time. I grew up going to Georgia,
Auburn, and Florida State games
with my family.
During the fall season my family
and I are so busy because every
one in my family has a sport, or
job, to do. So we never get a break.
My family has a tradition that
every Thursday before a football
game the next day, we get pizza to
eat, it's like our good luck charm if
you say so.
I love fall with all the pretty
leaves, football most definitely. If
you lived in my household you
would see how crazy it is before a
game; it's insane. My dad is either
talking to someone about the
game, or everyone is just stressed
out about the game.
My brother, on the other hand,
a quarterback on varsity, is hyped
because he’s just excited to play
under the lights. My sister, a
varsity cheerleader, comes home
stressing over how much time she
has to get ready; she’s still late no
matter how early she gets ready.
Now the morning of the game
is just chaos, everyone trying to
find clothes, a uniform, pants, you
name it.
In conclusion I love the fall
season even though it's a little
stressful. I love that football brings
my family joy and love. My family
loves football, it's like it rims in our
blood because my whole family
knows everything about football,
and what all the calls, positions
are in the game of football. All the
things that my family puts into a
sport just amazes me, and we all
love it. In my opinion football is
the best sport and the best way to
bring your family closer together.

Cross country is about endurance and pacing yourse

S ports aren't just good for your
health, they are also fun so
it's no wonder why so many
kids partake in an afterschool
sport. Most sports take place in
either fall or spring.
One sport in particular, cross
country, takes place in the fall at
Monroe County Middle School.
Cross Country is a sport where
you rim long distances. It's a great
sport for those who enjoy running.
It's all about endurance and pacing
yourself.
Meets are where you go and run a
course against other schools. Most
meets have courses that involve
running through rough terrains like
mud, woodlands, and hills. Middle
schoolers run a 2-mile course at
meets while high schoolers run a
3-mile course.
The main goal of cross country is
to run at a pretty fast pace for a long
distance. Although cross country is
mainly an independent sport, being
there for your team is crucial. The
top runners on your team are the
ones who get the points. So if you get
5th place that person earns 5 points.
The team with the least amount of
points wins. The scoring is similar
to golf.
I would highly suggest doing this
sport if you're interested; it's tough
sometimes but it's such a fun sport.

There are 20 sports teams at
Mary Persons and 11 teams at
Monroe County Middle School,
counting the boys and girls teams
in cross country, golf, tennis,
track and soccer each as one
program. Mary Persons assistant
principal and athletic director
Robert Lindsey gave the Board
of Education an overview of the
athletic programs at Mary Per
sons and Monroe County Middle
School on Aug. 9.
Fall sports at Mary Persons are
cheerleading, Cross Country
(boys/girls), football, softball,
volleyball, flag football (girls),
spirit cheer and riflery. Fall sports
at Monroe County Middle School
are cheerleading, cross country
(boys/girls), football, softball.
The 2021-22 school year was
the first time 6th graders were
allowed to participate in athletics.
Lindsey said the program was a
success, using the number of par
ticipants as a measure. Lindsey
said 568 students participated in
athletics last year, but the num
ber isn’t a good measure of the
percentage of students who par
ticipated since several students
participated on multiple teams.
Of the 568 athletes, 339 were
male and 229 were female.
One new sport, swimming, has
been added at Mary Persons for
2022-23. Lindsey said at least 13
students came to the meeting
about the new team. Practice will
be at Swim Macon; the first day
of practice is Oct. 10, and the first
meet is Oct. 24. The maximum
number of meets for varsity is 10
and for junior varsity is seven.
Finals are Feb. 2-4 at the Georgia
Tech Aquatic Center.
Lindsey provided a spotlight on
the new coaches in the Monroe
County Schools Athletic Pro
gram. He asked each of the new
coaches to share their fondest
memory as a player and to tell
why they are coaching at Monroe
County Schools. The new coaches
are Jaycob Haygood, head girls
soccer coach; Hannah Gross-
man, head volleyball coach; Jason
Morrow, head boys basketball
coach; Kenny Miller, head boys
soccer and flag football coach;
C.J. Easterly, head girls/boys golf
coach; Jessica Evans, head softball
coach.
Lindsey said he appreciated
Grossman stepping up to coach
volleyball when the position
became vacant. He pointed out
Morrow’s response to his fondest
memory as a player: “Growing
up I played football, basketball
and baseball and learned invalu
able life lessons as a participant
in each. However, my greatest
memory of playing sports is the
development of friendships with
my teammates as we worked hard
to achieve a common goal.”
“Life lessons. This is what we
want for our students,” said
Lindsey.
growing
Lindsey said the energy level
at the first softball game game
coached by Evans was “unbeliev
able.” He described her as a tough
coach and one who inspires en
thusiasm in the players and fans.
Lindsey said that over the last
five years (2018-2022) 42 Mary
Persons student athletes have
gone on to participate in college
athletics. He listed accomplish
ments over the last two years as
two team state championships,
eight individual state champs,
14 region championships and
the Athletic Program as 2020-21
Region 2AAA Sportsmanship
Winner and 2021-22 Region
2AAA Director’s Cup Winner.
