Two hospitalized in 5-vehicle pileup
A driver was cited for following too closely after causing a 5-vehicle pileup on 1-75 north
that sent two to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 20. Monroe County deputy Shania
Hawkins told the Reporter that the accident happened where construction has just one lane
open on 1-75 north near the Pate Road bridge. As cars were merging, a Dodge Ram with a
trailer was unable to stop and plowed into the back of a black Tahoe. The impact sent the
Tahoe into the back of a red GMC Terrain. The impact sent the Terrain into a Ford Escape. The
Ram also sideswiped a Subaru in the wreck. Hawkins said she cited the Ram driver for follow
ing too closely. The driver of the Tahoe and a passenger in the Terrain were taken by Monroe
County EMS to the hospital for treatment. “It’s a mess, said Hawkins. All lanes were closed for
almost an hour around 2 p.m. as first responders cleared the scene. (Photo/Steve Reece)

INCIDENTS
Continued from Page 7C
in a vehicle pursuit and gave
them his location. Cpl. Larry
Sullivan was nearby and
soon joined the chase.
The driver continued
traveling more than 120
mph, weaving in and out of
traffic and driving extremely
recklessly. Williams tried to
try to slow the vehicle down
in an attempt with a “box in”
technique, but the driver of
the Tahoe was driving too
recklessly.
The SUV took the exit at
High Falls Road with Sul
livan close behind doing 90
mph. After turning onto
Boxankle Road and then
onto Talmadge, the driver
suddenly stopped and
parked in the middle of the
road over a hillcrest. He then
jumped out and fled on foot.
Sullivan chased him
through the woods for sev
eral hundred yards until he
was able to deploy his taser
and arrest the driver.
Williams handcuffed the
two female passengers and
found a bottle of an alcoholic
beverage in the cup holder
beside the driver seat. When
Sullivan came back with the
driver, Williams could smell
alcohol on his person and
his speech was so slurred the
deputies couldn’t understand
him. He was taken to jail by
deputy Tyler Rodgers but
could barely stand upon ar
rival, so he was transported
to the Monroe County
Hospital for evaluation. A
warrant was filed against
him for fleeing. He was also
cited for failure to maintain
lane, following too closely,
littering, failure to signal,
driver to exercise due care,
aggressive driving, reck
less driving, driving in the
emergency lane, speeding
(2 charges), failure to stop at
a stop sign, open container,
obstruction, and DUI.
