PREVIEW

top schools?
A. It’s hard to believe that
this is only Philos second
season as a starting quarter
back based on his command
of Vandagriff’s offense. Last
season as a sophomore, he
was Top 10 in the country
in passing yards and though
it was in Single A, it’s still
impressive to throw for
more than 4,500 yards. He
also rims super well, which
makes him difficult for
opponents to stop. Even in
games where he struggled,
like when he threw two in
terceptions against Monroe
Area, he still rallied and
had 343 total yards and two
touchdowns. Philo has offers
from Arkansas State, Central
Florida and Toledo.
Q. What other PACS
players were being recruited
for Division 1, players that
Mary Persons needs to
know about?
A. Senior DB/WR Bailey
Stockton is the team’s best
asset, in my opinion. He has
offers from Arkansas State,
Army, New Hampshire,
Richmond, Tennessee Tech
and Valparaiso, but just does
so much in the passing game
and on the Wolverines’ sec
ondary. Another athlete is
senior Ethan Christian who
has averaged 74 receiving
yards per game over the last
two seasons. Senior lineman
Uriah Howard is probably
their biggest defensive star,
finishing with more than 60
tackles in 2020 and 2021.
Q. What are the Wol
verines’ overall strengths
and weaknesses, and what
would Mary Persons have
to do to pull the upset?
A. Strength is everywhere
— the high-powered spread
offense can score quickly
and in bunches, the defense
bends and doesn’t break and
forces turnovers and the
special teams is good, too.
But if the offense can’t get
going, whether by their own
doing or by Mary Persons
locking down, that’s the best
opportunity for an upset.
It hasn’t happened this
year, but last season in the
state championship, Trinity
Christian capitalized on
Prince’s errors which led to a
big win for the Lions.

MP tacked on one more
score in the third quarter
when Hickman found
senior receiver Maury Lowe
from 25 yards out. Fresh
man Gavin Cabe made the
PAT. With 3 TD passes in
the game, Hickman broke
JT Hartage’s career record
for passing touchdowns at
Mary Persons of 48.
Columbus tacked on a fi
nal score with 1:02 left in the
game when running back
Shaun Beard went 51 yards
for the score.
night need to know about
the games at PACS, the
stadium, and where do you
recommend they eat before
the ball game?
A. The stadium is fairly
small, given it’s a small pri
vate school, but it has good
concessions. Parking isn’t
bad and hopefully the rain
from Hurricane Ian holds
off. The best pre-game food
in Athens is Dawg Gone
Good BBQ in downtown
Athens, which is a small
family-owned barbecue
joint. Another good place is
Akademia Brewing, which
is a brewery that has great
food.
Q. Do Prince Avenue
coaches, fans, etc. know
anything about Mary
Persons and its history and
is this a big game for them,
or just another non-region
public school opponent?
A. Greg Vandagriff talked
in preseason about the
difficulty of finding op
ponents that were willing
to play Prince Avenue. He
managed to find six non
region opponents, so there’s
an expectation that all six
of these teams know what
they’re signing up for and
should be able to compete
with the Wolverines. They’ll
approach this game like
every other team and treat it
like the state championship.
Q. What is your predic
tion for Thursday night?
A. None of the previous
four out-of-classification
teams have been able to
offer much of a challenge
to Prince Avenue and I
don’t know if Mary Persons
is the team that gives the
Wolverines a regular season
loss. Especially coming off
a bye week, I expect Prince
Avenue to be well prepared
and cruise to a comfortable
win.
