MP girls win Greyhound Invitational

Mary Persons’ cross country brought
home two 1st place team trophies and
two individual overall 1st place winners
in its most recent competition. All Mary
Persons and Monroe County Middle
School cross county teams competed in
the Greyhound Invitational—Release
the Hounds 2022 on Saturday Sept. 24
in Gray. Boys and Girls Varsity and Boys
and Girls JV runners did the 5K (3.1
miles) while Middle School runners did
a 2-mile course.
The Varsity Girls team took 1st place
over eight teams with 83 runners at the
event, finishing with 36 points over 2nd
place Jones County (the host team) with
51 points and 3rd place First Presbyte
rian with 51 points. The average time
for the Mary Persons girls was 21:30
compared to 21:46 for Jones County and
22:59 for FPD.
The top runner for the Lady Bulldogs
was 11th grader Abbey Stembridge, who
finish 5th overall at 20:49. Just behind
her was sophomore Gabriella Hoover in
6th place at 21:06 with senior Madelyn
Causey not far behind in 9th place
at 21:38. Rounding out the winning
team were junior Alanna Wood, 14th;
freshman Olivia Tanner, 15th; junior
Jessica Goodwin, 19th; freshman Amelia
Meadows, 26th; freshman Lily Colley,
27th.
Mary Persons Varsity Boys placed 9th,
with an average time of 19:01, out of 20
teams with 153 runners in the race. Jones
County finished first with an average
time of 17:11, and Northside Warner
Robins finished second in the meet with
an average time of 17:23.
Sophomore Jonathan Head was the
top runner for the Bulldogs, finishing
42nd overall with a time of 18:34. Junior
Thiago Saralegui was 49th in the race
at 18:45. Other runners on the team, in
order of finish, were Brendan Funck,
18:55; Cole Battles,19:18; Isaac McKallip,
19:33; Gavin Mitchell, 20:16; Mac Roeser,
20:20; Matthew Biers 22:06. The team
included three juniors, two sophomores
and three freshmen.
Freshman Ella Martin was the top
finisher overall in the junior varsity girls
5K race. Three Mary Persons runners
competed, but a minimum of five run
ners is required to place as a team. The
meet included 40 runners representing
various schools but only two full teams.
Martin outpaced the other 39 runners
by over three minutes, completing the
course in 23:04 compared to the 2nd
place runner from Ola who clocked
26:38. Mary Persons’ Emma Parker
finished 9th overall, and Mary Kate Geer
came in at 29th.
Mary Persons JV boys finished 7th out
of 11 teams with 124 runners compet
ing. Jones County swept 1st place with
runners in 7 of the 8 top spots. Freshman
Jordan Mullis was the top Mary Persons
finisher in 37th place at 21:45. The other
MP runners, in order of finish, were
sophomore Bryce Shelton, 22:03; Todd
McCall, 22:20; Davis Wilson, 23:52; Ike
Dunwody, 24:31; Evan Rogers, 25:31;
Logan Watson, 25:41; Gabriel Lee, 27:46;
Colby Hubbard.
MCMS Girls took 1st place out of 10
teams with 62 points over Gray Sta
tion at 70 points, followed by Stratford
Academy with 73 points. There were 123
runners in the two-mile event. MCMS
runners averaged 15:16 in the race, the
same as 2nd place Gray Station, with
Stratford averaging 15:24. Carnryn
Miller was the top MCMS finisher and
5th overall with a time of 14:26. Lucy
Tanner was 6th overall at 14:38. The rest
of the Lady Bulldogs, in order of finish,
were Ella Kemper, Kaylie Martin, Carlie
Davis, Alyssa Wright, Henley Farmer,
Campbell Causey, Cassidy Scandrett,
Carli Finch, Hadley Wilson, Amelia
Hulsey, Emma Kinnebrew, Carolyn
Goode, Evelyn Biers, Abigail Buice, Ka-
dence King, Evelyn Watson, Elizabeth
Goode. Four of the runners are 8th
graders, 10 are 7th graders and five are
6th graders. MCMS Boys claimed 3rd
out of 11 teams with 101 points, only one
point behind 2nd place Gray Station at
100 points. Stratford finished 1st with 59
points. The average time for the MCMS
team, which competed against 140
runners, was 14:00. Bradley Hendricks
was the top finisher overall at 12:40. Fol
lowing 8th grader Hendricks for MCMS
was 6th grader Camden Tolbert at 13:56
in 16th place overall. Other Bulldog
runners, in order of finish, were Robert
Groebner, Cooper Day, Cash Meadows,
Isaiah Singletary, Ryder Garza, Cy Bevill,
Aaron Tripp Hallman, Sutton Minter,
Callen Campfield, Jonah Biers, Jacob
Watson. The team had one 8th grader,
eight 7th graders and four 6th graders.
The next event for cross country teams
will be the Baldwin Braves Invitational
in Milledgeville on Saturday, Oct. 1 with
all Monroe County cross country teams
planning to compete.
