Monroe Co. preps for hurricane evacuees
By Steve Reece

Hurricane Ian was up
graded to a major category
3 storm with winds up to
115 mph as tropical storm
warnings were issued for
the Georgia coast, includ
ing Glynn and Camden
counties on Tuesday morn
ing. Chatham and McIn
tosh counties are under
a tropical storm watch.
Meteorologists are still un
sure what impact the storm
will have on the rest of the
state, but Ian is expected
to strengthen even more
within 24 hours.
Hundreds of thousands
of Florida residents have
been ordered to evacuate
the Tampa area in Florida
in anticipation of a direct
hit from Ian and many
local hotels have already
begun to feel the impact. A
company representative of
the Comfort Suites at 343
Harold G. Clarke Pkwy
said on Tuesday afternoon
they still had 16 rooms
available, but they were
going fast. The representa
tive told the Reporter that
they will work with guests
with a stayover is needed
due to the storm. She said
if they will work with the
Clarion Pointe Hotel,
located just next door if
there is an overflow of
guests. Of course, that will
depend on the availability
of rooms there. She added
that any guests that are sent
there will be given the same
hospitality that they would
receive at the Comfort
Suites including breakfast 7
days a week. A clerk at the
Clarion Pointe said they
already have many evacu
ees arriving so they may
not be able to assist the
neighboring hotel in case of
an influx of guests.
All rooms at the Hamp
ton Inn were already sold
out by noon Tuesday. The
front desk clerk at the hotel
said guests started showing
up Monday afternoon and
the rush continued until
Tuesday morning. Over at
the La Quinta Inn, there
were only 2 or 3 rooms left
out of 67.
Monroe County Com
missioner John Ambrose
said the county is already
in motion getting chain
saws sharpened up and fu
eled and road crews are in
preparation. He said clear
ing roads is always a high
priority in any disaster with
the main arteries at the
top of the list to make way
for emergency vehicles.
Ambrose said if the county
gets a notice from Fire
Chief Matt Jackson, who
is also the county’s EMA
(Emergency Management
Agency) director, that the
storm is on the way, that
will be the signal to jump
in gear.
Vape shop clerk turns
tables on teen thieves
By Steve Reece

A clerk at the Xotic City
vape shop stopped two
juvenile shoplifters in the
parking lot at 448 Cabiness
Road on Sept. 20 after they
ran out of his store with
stolen vape products and
jumped into a gold 2000
Honda Accord where 3
other male juveniles were
waiting. According to the
incident report, Cpl. Kim
berly Barnett responded
to a report of a burglary in
progress at the store and
when she pulled in, sev
eral females were standing
outside pointing to the rear
of the U Save It Pharmacy
located across from the
vape store.
Barnett then saw two
male juveniles standing
on the sidewalk and asked
them to approach her. One
went to her while the other
went around the corner.
After being commanded to
stop, he got on the ground
and was handcuffed by of
ficer Richard Maddox and
Barnett. After both males
were secured in a patrol ve
hicle, Barnett saw the clerk
at the vape shop standing
in front of the gold Honda
holding several vapes in
his hands and pointing at
the car. Barnett asked the
three occupants if they
were with the other two
already in custody and after
they admitted they were,
the corporal had them
step out of the car and the
three 16-year-old and two
17-year-old boys were
taken to the Forsyth Police
Department. Another boy
had escaped on foot.
The clerk, who wished to
remain unnamed, told the
Reporter that two of the
boys came into the store
and while he was showing
items to one of them, the
other was stealing items
off a rack and putting then
into his pocket. The clerk
said he had four items in
his hand which the boy
snatched, and both ran
outside. He then followed
them out and while they
were starting to drive away,
he stood the front of the
Honda with his hand held
out and blocked them in.
He said he demanded that
they return the items they
had stolen, and they im
mediately gave them back.
Security video footage of
the incident was turned
over to Inv. Thomas.
The parents of the juve
niles, David Miley, William
and Lisa Johnson, Marla
Bass and Melissa Crook
were called and asked to go
to the police station where
the boys were interviewed
with their parents in the
room. All the juveniles gave
statements except for one
who refused at the request
of his guardian. Officers
were able to identify the
juvenile who had fled.
The clerk said the vapes
the boys shoplifted were
valued at $209.96. The
boys were released to their
guardians and charges will
be brought against them.
