(Spe cial to the Reporter) By Will Davis publisher@mymcnnet The city of Forsyth is considering ways to address a persistent skunk problem in the city’s country club area. City council member Greg Goolsby told council at their meet ing Monday that he’s had a lot of complaints about skunks in the area and wondered if the city could hire someone to trap and remove them. “Mating season is around the comer’’ said Goolsby, who has a home in the country club area. “Evidently the problem is pretty bad.” Mayor Eric Wilson said he’s heard complaints as well. And back in July 2020, Forsyth fire chief David Herndon found a family of skunks in a fenced-in equipment deck at the Forsyth Splash Pad. Steve Coleman of Meadow Drive told the Reporter that the skunks have been a major problem for his family. Ala. man gets 5 years prison for 2020 golf course attack By Will Davis publisher@mymcnnet An Alabama man was sen tenced to 5 years in prison on Tuesday Sept. 27 for as saulting a Forsyth man with a driver at the Forsyth Golf Club in 2020. Cedric Both- well, 58, of Birmingham, Ala. was sentenced to 5 years in prison by Judge Tommy Wilson after a Monroe County jury found him guilty of ag gravated assault. Bothwell struck a 24-year- old Forsyth man in the head and stomach with a driver near the 17th green at the Forsyth Golf Club on Nov. 7,2020, sending him to the hospital. The victim, Jeremy Wil liamson of Forsyth, suffered three broken ribs and head injuries in the attack. Williamson and a friend were playing behind Bothwell and his brother and cousin that Saturday when friction began over the speed of play. William son’s group complained that Bothwell’s group was playing too slowly. The argument started at the 14th hole. The young locals, Williamson and Blake Bowen, had repeatedly hit their golf balls up on them while they were play ing. The two groups started shouting at one another about etiquette and the speed of the game. Later, as Bothwell prepared to tee off of 18, he claims Williamson began marching towards them with a driver in hand yelling about etiquette. Williamson allegedly walked up to Bothwell near the cart and grabbed his arm aggressively. Bothwell, who told Maddox he feared for his life, struck Williamson in the face with his driver. Williamson then fell back onto the ground and agreed to back off. Williamson had blood on the left side of his face and shirt. He claimed that it was Bothwell who had ag gressively approached him with a golf club yelling and cussing. According to him, Bothwell raised the club and put it within an inch of his face. Williamson tried to grab the club, at which time Bothwell yanked it back and swung at his face, hitting Williamson’s jaw and left ear. Williamson says Bothwell then struck him twice in the abdomen and body slammed him to the ground. When he was lying face See PRISON Page 5A Chief: Cigarette caused fatal fire on Sutton Road A lit cigarette left by a granddaughter is blamed for a Sutton Road house fire that killed a Forsyth woman on Sept. 14. Monroe County fire chief Matt Jackson said three dif ferent investigators have looked at the evidence and all agree the fire was started by a smoking cigarette on the front porch. Jo Anne Turner, 63, called 911 to report a porch fire at her Sutton Road home just before 11 am. She had been recovering from hip surgery following a fall at home a few weeks ago, said Jackson, and was in the bathroom at the time of the fire. He said she had been mobile with a walker lately as part of her rehab but was still very limited. Dispatchers lost contact with Turner. Monroe County EMS and Forsyth firefighters arrived within about 4 minutes of the call and found her. But they were unable to resuscitate her. Jackson said they ruled out an electrical fire and said the cigarette is the only thing they can point to. “It’s pretty tragic,” said Jackson. “There was no willful intent.
