FUGITIVE
Continued from page 1A
a dark Dodge Charger
following too closely to a
tractor trailer and initiated
a stop. The driver, Samuel
Antonio Brown, 37, of
Savannah pulled over in
the emergency lane on the
bridge over Hwy. 42 N.
Williams told him to pull
further down to get off the
bridge.
After the vehicles were
moved, Williams walked up
to the Charger and Brown
wanted to know why he
had been stopped. Williams
could smell marijuana as he
explained that he was fol
lowing too closely especially
with the volume of traffic.
The sergeant asked Brown
to exit the vehicle and as he
did so, Williams noticed
that Brown left his drivers
door open. Williams asked
Brown if the vehicle was
his and he replied that it
was his wife’s car. Williams
then asked him if they had
smoked marijuana in the car
and Brown answered he had
around 6 am. that morning.
The sergeant told Brown
that smoking marijuana can
impair your ability to oper
ate the vehicle but Brown
answered that he was all
right to drive.
Asked if he had any mari
juana in the Charger, Brown
stated that he had an eighth
of an ounce but that there
was nothing in the vehicle
currently. Williams then
told him that he would do a
probable cause search of the
vehicle due to the odor of
marijuana and Brown asked
him if he could go ahead
and search the car right
away because he needed to
hurry up and leave.
Brown then looked
over his shoulder as
if he was seeing if any
traffic was coming then
bolted toward the driver
side door of the Charger.
Williams ran after him and
caught up with him as he
was getting in the car. Brown
was trying to put the car in
drive as Williams was trying
to remove him from the
vehicle.
Williams fought with
Brown as he was trying to
get the car in drive and they
went back and forth several
times from drive to park.
Brown was finally able to get
the car in drive and acceler
ated rapidly. Williams felt
the car moving and knew
he had to let him go due to
him hanging partially out of
the car.
Brown was driving too fast
for Williams to step back
and when he let go of him,
he hit the ground hard. He
struck his head on concrete
and began sliding down the
slow lane on the interstate
on his back causing damage
to his gun belt and uniform
shirt as well as his pants.
Williams hit the ground
hard enough to knock the
sunglasses off of my face.
When he came to, Wil
liams realized that he was in
the interstate and crawled
to the emergency lane.
He tried to call for other
units to advise them that
Brown had fled the scene
but his shoulder mic was
not working due to being
severed from his portable
radio. He also realized that
his portable radio had been
knocked out of its holster
and was in the slow lane of
the interstate but he was able
to retrieve his radio and call
for assistance.
After radioing for help,
Williams became very
dizzy and fell to the ground.
Several passing motorists
stopped to check on him
and Sgt. Robins, Inv. Mercer,
and Lt. Clay stayed with him
until EMS arrived. He was
checked out then driven to
the hospital by Sgt. Robins
to be evaluated.
Williams sustained a large
bruise on the back of his
head approximately the size
of a baseball. He also had
cuts and bruises on his el
bows from sliding down the
interstate. He had a severe
headache for the rest of the
day as a result of his head
striking the concrete.
Shortly after Brown fled,
deputies found his Charger
wrecked near Gresco Utility
on Rumble Road. A witness
told deputies they saw a
