Rolfe David Johnson
Rolfe David (Dave) Johnson was bom on Dec. 25,1935
and entered eternal rest on Aug. 19,2022, at the age of 86
years.
David was bom and raised on his family’s dairy farm
in Forsyth. He began milking cows at the age of five. He
attended Monroe County schools until he graduated from
Mary Persons High School in 1954. He loved playing MP
football and was a proud member of the Future Farmers of
America. He went on to attend Abraham Baldwin Agricul
ture College and the University of Georgia, graduating in
1959 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Animal Hus
bandry.
After graduation, he began working at the Reidsville State
Prison in their Science Department. He also worked on
the family farm before entering into a career with insur
ance. He began as an insurance agent with the Woodmen of
the World Insurance Company, and then took an Agency
Manager position with the Georgia Farm Bureau Insurance
Company in 1975 in Henry County. He lived, worked, and
raised his family in Stockbridge, Henry County until 1984
when he took the position of the Gordon County Agency
Manager for GFBIC. He turned down the opportunity to
promote to a District Manager a few times in order to stay
in Gordon County. While working for GFBIC, he excelled
and won many awards, but more importantly, he positively
impacted many people who worked for him.
David had many hobbies and other accomplishments in
his life. He enjoyed singing very much and was a member
of a men’s quartet in college, as well as the church choirs
at Russellville Baptist Church in Forsyth and First Baptist
Church of Stockbridge. The quartet he was a part of in col
lege won many awards in the various competitions in which
they participated. David drove many miles over the years
to his home place in Forsyth singing along the way. He also
loved football, hunting, fishing, cooking, and designing and
building things. He always found a way to improve anything
from mowers to trucks. He even put a Kobota engine in a
Chevy pickup truck!
David loved family and friends tremendously and loved
getting together with as many and as often as possible.
When visiting his nephew’s hunting cabin, he was elated. If
he wasn’t hunting, he was laughing with or cooking for the
crowd who gathered there. So many people have shared
with us what an impact he had on their lives. For some, it
may have been small, but for others, it was life changing.
One shared that no other person impacted his life more than
David did. He definitely made a difference for many, many
people.
David was a man of integrity. He said what he meant and
meant what he said. He was also an optimist. When asked
how he was doing, his usual answer was, “Finer than a frog’s
hair split three ways.” David had a great sense of humor and
enjoyed life to its fullest. He was famous within his family
and among friends for his BBQ and, especially, his BBQ
sauce. We could go on for days about how special he was
and how much he will be missed.
Thank you to all who added to David’s joy! He had so
many wonderful memories from his life in Monroe, Henry,
and Gordon Counties that mostly revolved around the
people he knew and loved.
David is preceded in death by his parents, Rolfe Hunt and
Nannie Kate Grant Johnson; his brothers, Barnielle John
son and William Johnson; his sisters, Janie Ruth Stewart,
DorothyMarshall Hearn, Imogene Moore Vincent, Merle
Giddens, and Evelyn Johnson. He leaves behind his wife of
43 years, Jeannie Singleton Johnson; his daughters, Libbie
Smith (Charles), Sharon (Tracy) Johnson, and Ramona
Hartman; and his son, Rolfe Bradley (Rachel) Johnson; his
grandchildren, Brandon (Tara) Smith, Kelvin (Lauren) John
son, Kyle (Kayla) Johnson, Beth Martin, CJ Martin, Thomas
Martin, Courtney (Jake) Hartman Herbermann, Hannah
Hartman, Gabrielle Hartman, Brooke Hartman, Judah
Hartman (Annie Blye), Logan Hartman, and Moriah Hart
man, Isaiah and Madeline Johnson, great grandchildren;
Brayden, Katie, Griffin, and Nolin Smith, Paisley Belcher,
Zoey Martin, Timothy Piper, Kinsey and Tate Johnson,
Ryleigh, Mason, and Beckham Johnson, Chason Hartman,
Sophia Herbermann, and Farrah Jane Hartman; his sister,
Gloria Johnson Nix; his sister-in-laws, Jeri Gray and Joyce
Moore; many wonderful nieces, nephews, great nieces, great
nephews, great-great nieces, great-great nephews, and even
some great-great-great nieces and great-great-great neph
ews; along with many special cousins and friends.
David’s life will be celebrated Oct. 15 at his family’s farm
and home place.
