MP Cross Country girls take 2nd in Cochran

The Mary Persons Lady Bulldogs
cross country runners snagged
2nd place and the Mary Persons
Bulldogs took 8th place at the
Bleckley County Invitational on
Thursday, Oct. 6 at the Bleckley
County Elementary School course
in Cochran.
The girls team competed against
12 teams and 130 runners repre
senting 22 different schools in the
5K (3.1 mile) event. The host team,
Bleckley County High School,
took top honors with 30 points to
Mary Persons’ 42 points. Third
place went to Jones County High
School with 55 points. The top
three teams fielded almost all of
the first 25 finishers with Stratford
Academy a distant 4th place with
140 points.
Freshman Kolbi McBrayer took
top honors for the Lady Bulldogs,
finishing 6th overall at 22:49; Ab
bey Stembridge came in 7th over
all at 23:10. Gabriella Hover wasn’t
far behind at 8th place (23:20), and
Madelyn Causey came in 10th
overall with a 23:33 run.
Others representing Mary Per
sons in the 5K, in order of finish,
were Olivia Tanner, Jessica Good
win, Lily Colley, Amelia Meadows,
Ella Martin, Hannah Goodwin,
Alecia Gifford, Emma Parker,
Mary Kate Deer and Esmeralda
Linares. The Mary Persons team
included seven freshmen, two
sophomores, three juniors and
two seniors.
The Mary Persons boys faced 20
teams and 254 runners represent
ing 24 schools at the Bleckley
County Invitational. Jones County
garnered the 1st place trophy with
33 points, and Southeast Bulloch
took 2nd place with 97 points.
Mary Persons 198 points put it
solidly in the top half.
The top Bulldog runners were
paced closely together, with the
four point-earning runners all
finishing within 39 seconds of
each other. Jonathan Head posted
the best time of the meet for the
Bulldogs with a 20:17 run. Thiago
Saralegui followed Head at 20:53.
Cole Battles finished next at 20:54,
followed by Brendan Funk at
20:56, Mac Roeser at 21:28 and
Isaac McKallip at 22:24.
Other runners representing
Mary Persons, in order of finish,
were Gavin Mitchell, Carter
Stembridge, Matthew Biers, Bryce
Shelton, Davis Wilson, Ike Dun-
wody, Todd McCall, Evan Rogers,
Logan Watson, Colby Hubbard
and Gabriel Lee. The team was
made up of seven freshmen, three
sophomores, six juniors and no
seniors.
The Bleckley Invitational didn’t
include junior varsity competi
tion, and Monroe County Middle
School didn’t compete in the
Middle School runs.
Mary Persons Cross County fans
will have the opportunity to see
their teams on their home course
on Thursday, Oct. 20 at the Mary
Persons Region Tuneup. The meet
begins at 5 p.m. Next up will be
the Georgia High School Associa
tion 3A Region 2 Meet, which will
be held at Jackson High school on
Tuesday, Oct. 25.
The Monroe County Middle
School Cross Country teams are
registered to compete at the 2022
Georgia Middle School State Cross
Country Championships hosted
by Bleckley County Middle School
on Saturday, Oct. 15.
