Tommy Moon is a Hometown Hero
By Steve Reece
stevereece@gmail.com
H e’s been all over
the world and
has visited nearly
every major city
in the U.S., but he’s never
found a place he liked better
than Forsyth.
Tommy Moon was born
in a little clinic on Railroad
Avenue 80
years ago this
coming Feb.
7. His parents,
Ruby and Will
Moon were
both work
ers at the Trio
Manufacturing
Company and
his grandparents were also
from Middle Georgia.
He was raised with two
older sisters, one of whom
still lives in Macon.
Tommy attended Mary
Persons but joined the
United States Marine Corps
in 1960 before graduating.
He was so young that he
needed his mother’s signa
ture to enlist.
He spent the next 12 years
in the military including a
tour in Vietnam. After his
return to the states, he was
given the opportunity to at
tend warrant officers training

school, but unfortunately, he
hurt his leg and had to drop
out. Even worse, after several
surgeries, he had to retire
from military service.
There was not only a job
waiting for him in Forsyth
but also Joanne Belknap.
They were married on Sept.
7,1974. They have two
children, Diana, who was a
cheerleader at Mary Persons,
and Jerry, who
played football.
They share four
grandchildren.
After a
stint with
the Forsyth
Police Depart
ment, Tommy
became a
deputy under Sheriff Cary
Bittick and later spent 22
years working as the Georgia
Power security superinten
dent. He then went to work
with the U.S. Marshalls for
10 years.
He now helps Joanne at
their little shop, The Honey
comb, on McCracken Street
in Juliette selling novelties,
gifts, and honey that he gets
from his own bees.
They’re busy these days
getting ready for the Fried
Green Tomato Festival which
will be held on Saturday and
Sunday, Oct. 29 and 30.
When
asked
what advice he has for
young Monroe Countians,
Tommy said, "Try to figure
out what you want to do in
life. Study hard. Keep a goal
and remember who you are
and where you come from.
No matter where you come
from, it's up to you to make
something of yourself.
Life is not fair, but you can
make something of yourself
if you've got the willpower.
And mind your momma
and daddy!"
