Fox City Witches in pink ride for United in Pink
By Steve Reece

It was no ordinary coven of witches that
gathered in downtown Forsyth on Satur
day, Oct. 22. Over 200 witches, all of them
pretty and all of them good, were assem
bled for the First Annual Fox City Witches
Ride. The event was held to benefit United
in Pink®, an organization dedicated to
helping families of women who have been
diagnosed with breast cancer.
Susan Harrell, originally from Thomas-
ton but now living in Culloden, with help
from friends, brewed up the idea to hold
the event inspired by a ride with only five
riders held just last year. Harrell had been
diagnosed with breast cancer in August
2021 and before she went into chemother
apy, her friends, Heather McGee Carroll,
Jennifer Vaughn Walker, Lisa Bellwin, and
Stephanie Thompson Crews decided to
surprise her and asked her to dinner just
before Halloween.
When she arrived late at Grits Cafe in
downtown
Forsyth, the
cha-ching
of a bicycle
bell caught
her atten
tion and
she saw
her friends
wearing
witches’
costumes
smiling
next to
bicycles
they had
decorated
in pink.
Harrell
donned
a witch’s
costume
they had
brought her
and joined
them on a
ride around
the courthouse square somehow without
crashing from laughing so hard.
Susan Harrell celebrates the witching hour, comraderie
with good friends and the opportunity to help the families
of women diagnosed with cancer on the Fox City Witches
Ride.
They had so much fun and Susan felt
so much better after the ride that she and
her friends called all their pretties together
from near
and far to
join them in a
ride this year.

Ride was
