Bank robbery suspect says he was only kidding'
By Steve Reece

A 32-year-old
Monticello man
accused of trying
to rob Robins Fi
nancial in Forsyth
on Wednesday,
Oct. 26 said he was
joking when he
stuck his finger in
his jacket to make
the teller think it was a gun,
and begged police not to
arrest him.
Bank manager India
Crumpton told Forsyth
police that the
offender, Michael
Loftis, came into
the bank in blue
pants and a gray
jacket initially to
cash a $100 check.
Since he wasn’t a
bank customer,
Crumpton said she had
to pull staff from the
drive-through to cash his
check. While Loftis was
standing at the counter
with his arms crossed, he
lifted his finger, still in his
pocket, pointed it at her
and said, “Give me all your
money!”
The teller hit the panic
alarm and Forsyth Cpl.
Kimberly Barnett and
officer Richard Maddox
immediately responded to
the bank on East Johnston
Street.
The officers walked up
behind Loftis, and Bar
nett grabbed the back of
his jacket while Maddox
grabbed his right arm.
When asked what was
going on, he told them he
was trying to cash a check
and go help his mom with
some renovations. When
Barnett asked if he had any
weapons on him, he moved
his arms down towards his
midsection and began to
say he had something.
She then grabbed his
right arm and brought
it behind his back while
Maddox did the same with
his left arm. He was told
to stop reaching and that
he was being detained. He
asked why.
He was then taken out
side the bank where he told
officers that he was joking.
Barnett told him you don’t
joke like that in a bank.
After he was cuffed with no
