17th Annual Green Tomato Festival draws movie fans to Juliette
Vendors line Juliette's McCrackin Street at the Green Tomato Festival.
By Steve Reece
stevereece&gmail.com
The 17th annual Green
Tomato Festival was
held last weekend in
Juliette after a two-year
hiatus. The festival is
held to celebrate the
town's fame as the loca
tion of the movie, "Fried
Green Tomatoes" which
was released in 1991.
Chairman of the
festival for several
years, Tommy Moon
said nearly 60 vendors
opened their booths Sat
urday morning welcom
ing fans of the movie
and people interested in
work from local artists.
Moon said the festival
has grown over the years
and the biggest issue was
parking.
Visitors were able to
find a place to park near
enough to McCrackin
Street where they
strolled along check
ing out an extensive
collection of artesian
works, crafts, artwork,
and homegrown goods.
There was music coming
from local bands on the
Opry House porch and
everyone had to check
out the famous Whistle
Stop Cafe.
Many folks had to
try the specialty of the
restaurant: fried green
tomatoes. Moon said
a lot of people worked
hard on the festival and
appreciated the turnout.
Gilda Stanberry,
executive director of
the Forsyth Convention
& Visitors Bureau said
the festival was a great
success and is important
to the identity of Juliette
and the entire Monroe
County community. She
said that $600,000 was
spent in the area over
the weekend plus an
additional $3,000 from
vendors staying in local
hotels. Stanberry added
that these amounts are
conservative numbers.
Over 6,000 people from
around the country
attended the two-day
event.
