By Steve Reece

A 43-year-old Forsyth
man was cited for prowling
after dispatch received a
call just after midnight on
Nov. 3 about a
man going into
peoples yards
on Stroud Street
and looking
around. What
happened
according to the
incident report
was that Forsyth
police officer
Michael Am-
erson was flagged down
by Gordonvion Dewberry
at 470 Stroud Street who
told him that a man he had
never seen before was in
his yard and near his sisters
gray Honda. He said that
when he tried to approach
the unknown man, the
man took off running
across the street to 479
Stroud Street, but it was
so dark he didn’t
know where he
went.
Amerson then
walked around
to the back of
479 Stroud Street
where Dewberry’s
brother, Byron
Lowe, was sitting
in his pickup truck
looking for the
man. While Am
erson was asking
Lowe if he had
seen anything, he
heard Dewberry
yell out that the
suspect was in the
shed on the side of
the house.
Amerson iden
tified himself as a
police officer and
ordered Ramon
Chavez (John) Alvarez,
who was inside the shed,
to open the roll-up door.
Dewberry and Lowe
were standing next to the
officer, and he told both
men to move back. Lowe
grabbed a nearby cinder
block and said if
needed he would
defend Amerson if
needed. After being
ordered several
times to open
the door, Alvarez
finally raised the
door and Amerson
saw a pickaxe in his
hands. The officer im
mediately pulled his pistol
and ordered him to drop
the pickaxe. Amerson had
to repeat his orders several
times until Alvarez finally
dropped the tool.
Amerson then ordered
Alvarez to the ground, but
again, he was slow to com
ply. After multiple orders to
get on the ground were giv
en, he lowered himself to

the ground and was told to
place his hands behind his
back. Amerson replaced his
pistol in its holster when
Alvarez turned sharply and
began to resist, causing
the officer to pull his pistol
once again.
It took several orders for
Alvarez to finally comply
and Amerson was able to
cuff him. Alvarez had an
open pocketknife in his
right back pocket. He was
then secured in Amerson’s
patrol car. The owner of
479 Stroud Street, James
Callaway came out and told
Amerson that Alvarez was
an employee of his and that
he sleeps in the shed some
times when he is kicked
out of his house but was
not aware that he would be
sleeping there that night.
Alvarez told Amerson
that he was walking in
the road when he was
approached by a man, and
he started to rim away
towards the shed. When
asked about why he had
the pickaxe in his hands,
Alvarez said that he uses
the pickaxe to secure the
roll-up door. When asked
about the open knife in his
back pocket, he explained
that he forgot it was there.
Callaway stated that Al
varez has been an employee
of his for a while but is a
drug addict. Alvarez was
taken to jail to await bond.
