HURST
Continued from Front
in the peach business
until lean times forced
him into accounting. But
his father smoked Camels
and died young, so Hurst
went to live with his aunt
at Houston Lakes, where
she had married into the
Davis family that owned
the popular recreational
lake, dance hall and store
in the 1930s.
“You could play three
records for a quarter!”
Hurst told the Reporter.
He graduated from
Perry High and went to
Georgia Tech, but re
mained on probation be
cause Perry only had 11
grades back then. It got
precarious when a cocky
young Yankee math
professor failed 18 of 23
students, including Hurst,
and refused to even an
swer their questions. The
failed students were able
to hire a different math
professor for summer
school and he got a B+
to stay at Tech. The next
year he wound up with
the same hard-edged
professor that had failed
him, and Hurst decided
to fight fire with fire. “I
told him I was one of
the 18 you flunked,” said
Hurst. “Our parents are
paying you to educate us
and when I ask question,
I expect you to answer!”
“You gotta get mean
with that crowd,” said
Hurst.
But before the semester
was over, the Japanese
bombed Pearl Harbor
and Hurst went to Navy
flight school. He was
one of the 20 percent to
finish flight school and
was assigned to the F4U4
Corsair bent wing that
had a 2000 HP motor.
It had a 55 gallon gas con
tainer in front of the pilot
and you could add up to
3 external tanks for long
bombing missions, said
Hurst.
Hurst met up with his
squadron in the Phil
ippines and Okinawa
in April 1945 and flew
numerous missions in his
F4U4 fighter plane. His
combat mission ended
when the A bombs were
dropped on Aug. 6 and
Aug. 9. He stayed on oc
cupational duty in Japan
until 1946. After the war,
he returned to Georgia
Tech and joined the Re
serves but was re-activat
ed as a helicopter pilot in
the Korean Conflict. He
and his wife Peggy have
three grown children. He
retired from the railroad
industry.
Hurst and all of Mon
roe County’s six WW2
veterans were invited to
the Veterans Day cer
emony on the Forsyth
courthouse square at 11
a.m. on Friday. Rain is
expected in which case
the ceremony will be
moved inside the Monroe
County Clubhouse.
Besides Hurst, the
other WW2 veterans in
Monroe County are Wil
liam H. Chambless, Sam
Studstill, Billy Harris,
Henry Self, and Johnny
Wilkes. On this Veterans
Day, Monroe County
wishes all of its veterans a
Happy Veterans Day, but
especially those six who
served in World War 2
and are still with us today.
