PASTOR S CORNER by Rev. Brian Moore
God has a purpose in
allowing suffering
I know there are many people that are
hurting from various trials. Maybe
you’ve asked the question: “Why did
God allow this to happen?” or “Why
do bad things happen to good people?”
or “What did I do to deserve this?”
There are many people today, espe
cially young people, walking away from
religion because of an insufficient view
of suffering. An empty, purposeless view
of suffering leaves a person
stuck in an endless blame
game. Suffering is purposeful
and is a necessary part of
sanctification.
Sanctification is the process
in which God makes His chil
dren holy. God providentially
uses every circumstance in a
believer’s life to accomplish
this. Therefore, we should
ask “What benefits would
be obtained if we sought
to endure suffering for the
glory of God?” We learn of three benefits
from Romans 5:1-5.
The first benefit of suffering is growing
in perseverance. Suffering displaces our
trust.
When everything seems to be going
our way and our needs are being met, we
tend to trust in ourselves and our own
abilities. Suffering can quickly displace
that trust. It is not until your trust is
placed fully in Christ that you will be
able to persevere.
God is doing us a great favor by getting
us to the end of ourselves so that we
will trust solely in Him. When we get
to the end of ourselves, we are finally
able to rest in the sovereignty of God
over our lives. The biblical definition of
“perseverance” is “steadfast adherence to
a course of action in spite of difficulties
and testing”.
James 1:2-4 says “My brethren, count
it all joy when you fall into various
trials, knowing that the testing of your
faith produces patience. But let patience
have its perfect work, that you may be
perfect and complete, lacking nothing.”
The second benefit of our suffering is a
true Christlike character. The connection
between suffering and character is that
true character is the quality of that which
is exposed when tested.
What comes out when you are
squeezed by the pressures of life? True
Christian character is the result of the
image of Christ that is already in us
being made more visible.
1 Peter 1:6-7 says “In this you greatly
rejoice, though now for a little while, if
need be, you have been grieved by var
ious trials, that the genuineness of your
faith, being much more precious than
gold that perishes, though it is tested by
fire, may be found to praise, honor, and
glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ”
A goldsmith knows what kind of
beautiful jewelry he wants to make out
of a lump of gold. He also knows that he
is going to have to heat that lump up to
extreme temperatures multiple times be
fore it will be ready to mold into jewelry.
Each time the gold is heated to extreme
temperatures, impurities will float to the
surface and will be scraped off the top.
Then it is allowed to cool back down
only to be heated up again. This process
is complete when the goldsmith can see
his own reflection in the gold.
God is concerned about one thing
above all else in the lives of His children:
Christlikeness! HE WANTS
OU TO BE LIKE JESUS!!!
e times that we best reflect
esus are when we are totally
dependent upon Him! As
e endure trials, let us ask,
“God what would you like to
accomplish in my fife through
his? How are you equipping
e? How will this make me
ore like Your Son Jesus?”
You can rest assured that
He has a plan and His plan is
good.
The third benefit of our suffering is a
lasting hope. Character that has been
shaped through testing produces hope in
the faithfulness of God.
Romans 15:13 says “Now may the God
of hope fill you with all joy and peace in
believing that you may abound in hope
by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
One hope that you can certainly hold
onto is that if God allowed a trial into
your life, He has an amazing purpose
to accomplish with it. Romans 8:28
says “And we know that all things work
together for good to those who love God,
to those who are the called according
to His purpose.” Suffering produces
perseverance, perseverance produces
character, and character produces hope!
If you go back and look at Romans 5:2,
you find the ingredient to being able to
endure suffering with the right mindset.
“stand in grace and rejoice in hope of
the glory of God!” We have to get to the
place where we care more about Gods
glory than our own comfort. We have to
find our total confidence and “hope” in
the steadfast, promise-keeping, sovereign
God of the Bible. Gods promises should
be enough to hold us in the midst of
trials.
We don’t have to understand our
circumstances to be able to trust in His
sovereignty. Instead of praying, “Lord
please take this suffering from me or
please help me avoid it.” We ought to
pray, “Lord, if you don’t remove it, make
me more like your Son Jesus through it,
no matter what it takes! You know what
you want this piece of jewelry to look
like.”
