N LOVING
James Glover Stuart
February 29, 1928 - November 10, 2022
James Glover Stuart was born on Feb.
29,1928, and passed into Gods peace on
Nov. 10,2022. Monroe County Memo
rial Chapel oversees arrangements. A
visitation was held Sunday Nov. 13 at
Monroe County Memorial Chapel with
a home going service and burial at New
Providence Baptist Church in Smarr on
Monday Nov. 14.
Glover was the son of the late Preston and Fannie Lee
Stuart and was the fraternal twin to the late Gladys Stuart
Rogers. Glover was preceded in death by his parents, a
brother Hollis Stuart, sisters Helen Kimbell and Gladys
Rogers. He thoroughly enjoyed being a leap year baby,
especially when he shared that unique birthday with his
great granddaughter Faith.
Glover grew up and attended school in Monroe County
and in 1945 went to work for Georgia Power at the Ark
wright Plant and later worked at Plant Harley Branch. He
spent 20 years at Georgia Power and then became an In
ternational Representative with the International Brother
hood of Electrical Workers. (IBEW) representing workers
in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi
for 26 years, retiring at age 70.
In 1950 Glover was drafted into the U.S. Army to serve
in the Korean Conflict where he was wounded twice
and received 2 Purple Hearts. Following his recovery, he
returned to Smarr and his bride Evelyn Ham Stuart where
they made their home. They enjoyed 71 years of marriage.
Glovers life was a life of a commitment he had made
while wounded in Korea: that if he recovered his life
would be dedicated to serving his church and community.
That promise was kept as he served as a deacon at New
Providence Baptist Church, overseeing the building of a
new sanctuary; he served there many years before becom
ing a member and deacon of Forsyth First Baptist.
Throughout his life he was active in the Democratic
Party, serving for many years as president of the Monroe
County Democratic Party. Following his retirement, he
became active in many civic organizations: Georgia Power
Ambassadors, Forsyth Lions Club, Forsyth Exchange
Club, American Legion, Gideons International and Meals
on Wheels where he helped to both prepare and deliv
er meals. Active for years with Habitat for Humanity,
working to build homes in Monroe County for those who
qualified for an affordable home. He managed the rental
of both the American Legion Hall and Monroe County
Club house for many years. Always eager to help his fellow
man, he would transport local individuals to dialysis and
cancer treatments, plow garden patches for those who
wanted a garden or giving away vegetables and turnip
greens that he was especially proud to grow.
Glovers life of volunteerism lead to him being recog
nized by many organizations. In 2004 he was a 13 WMAZ
Straight from the Heart Honoree, in 2014 the Central
Georgia Council Ocmulgee District of the Boy Scouts
of America honored him as a stellar citizen and for his
military record. At age 90 the Monroe County Chamber
of Commerce and the Reporter named him as Citizen of
the Year.
Glover will be missed by the Monroe County Commu
nity and his family and friends. He is survived by his wife
of 71 years, Evelyn Ham Stuart, Children: Yvonne Stuart,
Celeste Stuart Smarr, Stan Stuart (Julie) and Lynn Stuart
Deveraux (Bryant), grandchildren: Nathan Jackson (Mi
chelle), Emily Smarr, Kasey Smarr (Rachael), Branndon

Faith Jackson, Karter Smarr, Dylan Parrish, Kaylee, Riley
and Tyler Hadden, Eli Stuart, Matthias Young, Samuel

during the past year.
