Learning how to love
A s you are reading this article
today, I implore you to answer
this statement. My number one
goal in life is...
Pause and think about that for a minute.
My number one goal in life is or what is
most important to me is ... how would
you complete that sentence?
Would you say my number one
goal in life is to be happy? Or my
number one goal in life is to be
loved. Or my number one goal
in life is too be successful in my
career.
If you haven’t ever thought this
question through, I encourage
you to, because however you
answer that question is the prin
ciple that most likely dominates
your life. It is the most important
value in your life. You may have
never thought it through, but you use it all
the time.
Every time you make a decision, every
time you have a choice, you access the da
tabase in your brain, and you decide what
you’re going to do based on your principle
that dominates your life. For instance,
if my dominant life principle is to have
fun then this evening if I get a couple of
invitations on the phone, I’m going to tend
to choose the thing that’s the most fun to
do. Because that’s what’s most important to
me; to have fun. If my dominant life value
or principle is safety, then I’m going to
tend to make every decision in life based
on what’s the safest choice.
Does God say anything about this? What
does he say should be our greatest desire?
Our guiding principle? In the Bible in the
book of 1 Corinthians 14:1 he says this,
“Let love be your greatest aim.” Let love,
not status, not success, not possessions,
make love the highest aim of your life.
Why? Because God is love and he wants
you to be like him.
Life is all about learning how to love.
In fact, one day Jesus was walking down
the street and a guy came up to him and
he said, “Lord what is the most important
command in the Bible?” He said Jesus, of
all these things that are in the Bible what
should I really focus on?
Jesus said, I can summarize the entire
Bible for you in two sentences. If you get
these two things, you will get what life is
all about. It’s called the Greatest Com
mandment found in Mark
12:30-31 “Love the Lord
your God with all your
heart and with all your
soul and with all your
mind and with all your
strength. 31 The second is
this: ‘Love your neighbor
as yourself! There is no
commandment greater
than these.”
He said nothing in the
Bible is more important
than these two things. Learn
to love God with all your heart and, by the
way, learn to love everybody else. If you get
those two things, then you’ve got it.
The Bible also says this, 1 Corinthians
16:14 “Everythingyou do must be done
with love.” What does that include?
Everything. Everything you do must be
done with love. Does that include a text
message? Or posting on social media?
Or sending an email? Some of us need to
tape this verse to our computer or our cell
phones.
Does this include ordering fast food
when you can’t understand the speaker?
Yes, it does. “Everythingyou do must be
done with love.” Does that mean you are
nice to those who have different political
views than you? Or to people who don’t
look like you or don’t have the same world
view as you do? Yes, it includes everything
you do, and every person you interact in
life with should be treated with love.
Rev. Hambric Brooks is pastor of First
Baptist Church Forsyth, 95 W. Morse Street
Forsyth. The Pastors Corner is sponsored by
the Monroe County Ministerial Association.

Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. at Christ UMC, 417N.
