charged with shooting Forsyth man
By Will Davis

Two Puerto Rican men
have been charged with
trying to
shoot and
kill their
boss, a
Forsyth
resident,
hoping
to get his
job as
manager
of the Lake
Oconee
Ritz-Carlton.
Putnam County sher
iff Howard Sills told the
Reporter that Danny
Rodriguez-Rivera, 37,
of Eatonton, and Kervin
Alicea-Lopez, 22, of
Greensboro, have both been
charged with aggravated
assault in the Feb. 9 shooting
of Ritz manager Ralph Rella,
67, of Forsyth.
Sills said a witness came
forward who said that
Rivera and Lopez left the
Ritz together as Rella left for
home just before midnight
on Feb. 9, firing a fusillade of
bullets, according to Sills, at
least 9 rounds, into his car,
hitting him once.
Rella, who lives on
Cabaniss Avenue in Forsyth,
drove himself to Putnam
County Hospital and sur
vived his injuries. Rella had
cited Rivera as a possible
RIVERA
suspect, saying that they had
had a conflict.
Deputies had questioned
Rivera twice. Sills said on
both occasions, Rivera
told law enforcement that
he didn’t
leave his
job at the
Ritz-Carl-
ton that
night until
well after
midnight.
But Sills
charged
Rivera
with lying to police on April
8 after video from the Ritz,
the Waffle House and Wing
Maxx show Rivera on the
road earlier. The Ritz video
showed Rivera and two
co-workers going into the
Ritz employee parking lot
around 11:40 p.m. All three
of them get into Riveras
BMW and then Rivera gets
out and pulls something out
of his trunk, said Sills. The
other two guys return to the
hotel while Rivera hides in
his BMW behind a dump
ster, said Sills. When Rella
gets into his 2012 Sonata to
leave, Rivera follows him,
said Sills.
Rella was shot by someone
in a white car on Hwy. 44
near Scott Road in Eaton
ton around 11:45 p.m. that
night. The gunshot went
through his arm, said Sills.
Sills said if Rella had been in
the passenger seat that night,
he would have been dead.
Hospital officials called the
sheriffs office around 12:06
am. Rella told investigators
he left work at 11:45 p.m.
and was driving South along
Hwy 44 to Forsyth when a
white car pulled up behind
him and then moved along
side him and somebody
inside the car opened fire on
his 2012 Sonata.
One of the bullets passed
through the driver-side
window and hit Rella in the
arm, Sills said. The gunman
fired multiple times and
then sped on down the road.
Rella continued to drive
himself to Putnam General
Hospital, where he was
treated and transported by
ambulance to a hospital in
Macon.
The sheriff said there are
nine bullet holes in the So
nata, probably from a 9mm
handgun.
Sills said they initially
didn’t have enough evidence
to charge Rivera with the
shooting. But then a witness
came forward last week who
said Rivera was the shoot
er and that Lopez was the
driver in the attack.
Sills said the two men are
being held on a cash bond
because they’re not from
Middle Georgia and there
fore considered more of a
flight risk.
