We need to talk with
God—He's listening
Spending Time with God
T hursday, May 4th, is the Nation
al Day of Prayer. There will be
gatherings all over our nation to
pray for our cities,
states, our nation, and our
world.
Prayer is our part of the
vertical conversation we
have with God. He speaks
to us through His Word and
we respond to Him through
prayer.
We should certainly do
more listening than speaking
in that conversation. This
means spending time in
Gods Word and praying in
response. It also means looking to Gods
Word for answers to our prayers. The
Word of God instructs us on how to pray.
We should pray like Jesus. Jesus set the
example by consistently going to His
Father in prayer. Mark 1: 35 says, “Now in
the morning, having risen a long while
before daylight, He went out and
departed to a solitary place; and there
He prayed.”
Matthew 14:23 - “And when He had
sent the multitudes away, He went up on
the mountain by Himself to pray. Now
when evening came, He was alone there.”
Luke 6:12 - “Now it came to pass in
those days that He went out to the moun
tain to pray, and continued all night
in prayer to God’.’
Luke 22:41-42 - “41 And He was with
drawn from them about a stone’s throw,
and He knelt down and prayed, 42 say
ing, “Father, if it is Your will, take this
cup away from Me; nevertheless not My
will, but Yours, be done.””
We should not pray for show (Mat
thew 6: 5-6). We need to know who our
audience is when we are praying. Make
sure it is God alone. We should pray with
simplicity, knowing that God knows all
things and desires to meet our needs
(Matthew 6:7-8).
Gods readiness to answer the prayers of
His children and His perfect knowledge
of what we need should cause us to be
simple in our wording. We should pray
with perseverance (Luke 18:1-
8) and Persistence (1 Thessa-
lonians 5:17).
We do not pray with perse
verance to change Gods mind,
but to express our total depen
dence upon Him and conform
our mind to His will.
We should also pray with
confidence. Matthew 21:22
says, “And whatever things
you ask in prayer, believing
you will receive.” Praying in
faith does not mean you will
always get what you ask for. It means you
believe you will either get what you ask
for or something better because Gods
will is better.
When we pray, we should pray out of
obedience. John 15:7 says, “If you abide
in Me, and My words abide in you,
you will ask what you desire, and it shall
be done for you.”
We are praying to our Heavenly Father
who knows our every thought and deed.
We should seek to honor Him through
our lives as we go to Him in prayer. We
should be forgiving toward others as we
go to Him for forgiveness (Matthew 6:14-
15). We should go to Him often in prayer
because without Him, we can do nothing.
Let us stay in Gods Word regularly and
respond to His Word in prayer. Healthy
relationships are built off of healthy com
munication.

Forsyth Bicentennial
Fun Fact
By Ralph Bass
ralphbassir@gmail.com
Twelve years after
Alexander Graham Bell
patented the telephone
in 1876, residents of For
syth were beginning to
install the new commu
nication technology.
In 1888 the local news
paper, the Advertiser,
reported that “Forsyth
is catching on to the
telephone fever.”
Evidently the tele
phone fever was not too
widespread, though, for
the news article revealed,
“There are now in op
eration in the city, three
telephones put up for
individual use, and run
ning from the business
houses of the owners to
their respective homes.”
With the introduction
in Forsyth in 1895 of an
exchange, so called be
cause connections could
be made at a switch
board between any two
parties subscribing, tele
phone users in Forsyth
could call a larger num
ber of persons. That is, if
they paid the charge of a
dollar a month.
The man behind the
creation of telephone
service in Forsyth was
Dan H. Green, whose
business was first at 44
North Jackson Street.
[The name plate Green
and Hale is still there,
Odolphus O. Hale being
his brother-in-law.]
A Horologist trained
at the Rockford [Illinois]
Watchmakers Institute,
Green could “design,
make, and repair time
pieces of every descrip
tion.” He advertised
that he could also repair
guns, pistols and sewing
machines.
Although his first
exchange was probably
at 44 North Jackson, in
1900 Green moved his
company to 16 North
Jackson on the square.
He built a second story
to his store for the office
of the exchange. From
this second story tele
phone operators made
their
con
nections and conveyed
local news.
Green oversaw the
expansion of telephone
service from Forsyth
to Cabaniss, Smarr,
Bolingbroke, and then
eventually to Macon.
The line from Forsyth to
Macon featured chestnut
posts and two no. 12
copper wires for better
transmission.
By the end of 1899,
Green could provide
telephone connection
to New York, too. He
celebrated the expansion
of service by allowing
people in Forsyth to call
their friends in New
York free.
In 1904 the Southern
Bell Telephone Com
pany got the telephone
franchise for Forsyth
and Green became man
ager of the operation.
Southern Bell, though,
immediately caused
a ruckus in the com
munity: the company
increased the monthly
rates to two dollars for
a household and three
dollars for a business.
Irate citizens in Forsyth
held a public meeting at
city hall to protest, but
probably to no avail.
