Friend* Showed Their Appreciation of the Honor Which the State Con vention Conferred I pon Him—Klo qnent Tribute Paid the Chairman of Georgia's Delegation by Hon. J. C. C. Black.—Speeches by Other Prominent Augnstan*. Augusta, June 15 —To testify their cor dial approval of the action of the State Convention in electing Hon. Boykin Wright delegate to the National Conven tion from the state at large, and chair man of the Georgia delegation, a number of his friende went out from the city to night to his homo in Summerville, upon several electric cars, carrying a brass band to give him a serenade. After several stirring strains by the band, Hon. J. C. C. Black, voiced the sentiments of the crowd in an eloquent tribute to the loyal Democracy and splen did party services of Mr. Wright, and the gratification that his fellow citizens felt In the fact, that from all over the slate had come the cordial and spontaneous movement to do him honor. Mr. Wright responded in happy vein, assuring his fellow citizens that he valued their friendship and approval of the ac tion of the convention, even more highly than the honor itself. He then went into a brief discussion of the work which the National Convention would have be fore it. and the importance of the Issues Involving the very integrity of the repub lic, itself, that confront the people of the country In the pending campaign Calls were made by the crowd for Judge W. F. Eve, Judge H. C. Ronev, Messrs. M P. Carroll, D. G. Fogarty. W. H. Bar rett, E. B. Hook, J, J. Doughty, C. A. Picquet, P. M. Mulherin and S. H. Cohen, and each responded with brief tributes to Mr. Wright, his successful leadership and unselfish party service. Mr. Hook called attention to the fact that Richmond Is coming back to the in fluential position in stale politics she had occupied In former years, and as she had given Georgia governors in the past, she eould do so in the future, and following Boykin Wright, Richmond county democ racy would not go wrong. This sentiment was met with hearty Indorsement, and this is a proposition which the people of Georgia may begin to think about. OTHER MEMBERS NOT NAMED. June 35.—Chairman dußlgnon srtil not announce the eleven additional members of the States Executive Com mittee. which he has the power lo tp. point, for some time yet. Power was conferred on the Executive Committee to perfect Democratic organ- UaMoA in the counties where such does not exist. There are not many of these counties. June 15.—The complication* In he way of Rev. William Evans of Co lumbia, 8. C., accepting the call to St. Duke's Episcopal Church in this city, having been removed, there is nothing to hinder his acceptance now. in case he Is again called to the pastorate. He re fused the call on the ground that, in ad dition to the work of his own church, he was required to hold three weekly prayer meetings at the Cathedral. The Bt. Duke's congregation rose up in arms and threatened to withdraw from the Fulton Cathedral chapter unless their pastor was relieved of these extra duties. This threat had the desired effect and now, in lieu of the three prayer services required by the former law, St. Duke’e pastor will be required under the new law to perform only such service in the Cathedral as he may be able to give the time for from his pastoral work. MAY GO OUT ON A STRIKE. Atlantn Sanitary Employes Waul More Wage*. Atlanta, June 15.—One hundred men employed in the city sanitary department may go out on a strike for better wages and fewer hours of work tn the next few days. Meetings for the purpose of organi zation for a strike have been held and leaders In the movement have been active to get the men tn their control. Atlanta, June 15 —Mayor pro tem James L Mayson announces that he will make the race for city attorney against Judge James A Anderson, the present occupant of the office. The primary occurs Oct. 4. Lonndfn County Mpfnups to Compro iii fllnek Tmei. Valdosta, Ga., June 15.—There was a surprise marriage, at Lake Park last night, the contracting parties being Remer Y. Jones of this city and Miss Corral Bevlll of that place. The ceremony was performed by Eider A. B. Herring of that place. No announcement of the marriage had been made and the friends of the couple were very much surprised to hear of it to-day. Next Monday is the day for the elec tion here on the question of issuing $2T.000 more bonds to ''omplete the sewerage sys tem and extend the water works. The funds for the sewerage work ran short, owing to the fact that the work was ex tended beyond the original estimate. The election has excited very little interest so far. and it is conceded that the bonds will be issued without trouble. County Commissioner Peeples had a tilt with a representative of the Western Union Telegraph Company yesterday over the matter of back tajees. The city and county officials set out some time ago to collect these back taxes, which, under a recent decision of the Supreme Courts, are due for twemy-three years. It is un derstood that several counties made o compromise with the companies, allowing them to pay only a part of what was claimed. The Western Union representa tive was here yesterday to see the coun ty officials, but they flatly refused to take a cent less than the amount claimed. The matter ha# not been settled as yet, and will come up again In a few days. •A report cornea from Ousley of the larg est rattlesnake of the season being killed there. Mrs. William Davis, while out walking, came near stepping op the snake, and when she saw it she called her hus band to kill it. He shot the rept le, which measured over seven feet long and had eighteen rattles. Over a hundred school teachers have been attending the institute here th's week, and they have, been hearing excel lent lectures at nights. Prof. Otis Ash more of Savannah charm’d them with illustrated lecture on astronomy night be fore last. Prof. Charle# I.ane has the boards for to-night and will speak upon ’’Things Not Found in Books." WEDDING AT C RESCENT. Social Event of the Season In Mc- Intosh County. Darien, Ga., June 15.—The social event of the year In Mclntosh county was the wedding of Mr. J. Archie La Roach and Miss Laura Gatehouse at the Methodist Church at Crescent last night. Mr. La Roach is a member of the Mclntosh Light Dragoons, and as an evidence of his pop ularity Cap*. Fox, with nearly the entire company In uniform, went from Darien on a special train. A number of others, not members of the company, also at tended. The little church was decorated with much taste. There was a large attend ance from the neighborhood, and the building was crowded. Rev. William McW. Young of his city performed the ceremony. The train arrived from Darien at 8:30 o’clock and the ceremony was soon over. The bride and groom were imme diately overwhelmed with congratula tions. After the ceremony at the church v the crowd was entertained at the hospitable home of the groom's mother, Mrs. Mar tha La Roach. Mr. Lit Roach is one of this county’s most substantial and pop ular young men. The bride is the beau tiful daughter of Mr. nnd Mrs. William Gatehouse, and has many* amiable traits of character. NEGHO HANGED FOR ASSNI LT. His Victim Said to Have Reen n Nine-Year-Old Child. Columbia, S. C., June 15.—Hamilton Mc- Gill, a negro, aged 22, was hanged at Klngstree, Williamsburg county, to-day for ravishing 9-ye*r-o!d Collie Eddie, May 10. McGill leaves a wife and two children. He was much distressed at their non-ett tendance to-day. He talked for a half hour In the hot sun before his execution. He admitted his guilt, but said It was with the girl's consent. This was the plea made at hi* trial. The child was un der nge. McGill woe a laborer on the Eddie farm, and being the son of an old slave cook, was allowed many privileges about the place. When told to-day that he would hong, as a reprieve was Impossible, he hung his head a moment, then said: "Well, I will go to heaven.” "What sort of place Is heaven?” he was nsked. "A place of rest, at least that is what people tell me. 1 never have been In any other place than here.” TRI STKK9 OF UNIVERSITY. Some Important Matters Derided nt the First Session. Athens, Ga., June 15.—The trustees' ses sion to-day was quiet, mainly hearing re ports and organizing. It was decided that students coming from other states must pay *SO fee, besides matriculation. Professors to be elected by the board must bo nominated by the chancellor. Fifteen members of the board are pres ent. to-day's arrivals being Senator Ba con, Judge Gober, Clark Howell, Bryon Bower, Gov. Candler. Others are ex pected before Monday. It will be held in Blackshrar. Rev. W. R. Harbin has a group picture of the surviving members of the Eighth Georgia Regiment, who attended the re union at Louisville. Ky. There were 28 members of the regiment at Louisville. Mr W. B. Fenton has bought a lot from Mr. B D. Finn, superintendent of the wa terworks station, on which to build his natatorium. It is 125x100 feet, and is nice ly located for the proposed swimming pool. Some of our truck farmers report hard luck this season on account of the insects. One man will suffer almost a total loss. Pumpkin bugs have invaded his field, and thousands of them are eating his cucum bers. squashes, cantaloupes, melons, etc., and he fears they will get into his potatoes and other crops. BEAU 111 NT AT LAKE CITY. First Hear Seen in Tlmt Section In Thirty lrnrs. I*ake City. Fla.. June 15.—The first bear hunt einee the spring of 1860 was enjoyed yesterday by a large crowd of our coun try citizens, when a monster bear, weigh ing 400 pounds, made his appearance in the Suwannee shoals nettlement, about six miles northwest of the city. The chose was e lively one, and every farmer for mllet? around. Joined in with his full force of dogs and guns, making an aggre gation of about twenty-five men. and about half a hundred dogs of all descriptions and kinds. His bearship wan chased into a small cypress swamp and surrounded, where he was finally landed by the crowd. In the hunt yesterday, no one was hurt, and all enjoy telling just how scared and excited the other fellow was. This is the first bear seen/ in this sec tion since 1860. nearly thirty years ago. On that occasion. Mr. T. C. Carter, one of the leading merchants of to-day, then a small boy, was among the party, and received a fall, wrenching his foot, from which he has never recovered, and car ries e lame foot to-day ns a reminder of that bear. The grading committee which has been in session since the county examination, grading the papers of the applicants for teachers’ certificates, finished to-day. Out of the forty-five applicants, forty-one parsed, only four falling. This is the Yest average ever made by so large a number of applicants The Columbia county delegation to the State Convention, twenty-four strong, will leave Monday for Jacksonville, ac companied by about iw'enty-tive of “the boys" who go to see that the delegation has a good time from every standpoint. The delegates have no special favorite among the gubernatorial candidates, nor among any ether of the various candi dates so far as that goes. They will view' the field and <hen cast about among them selves as to the man or men of their choice. 001/LD NOT ARREST PICiKREN. Sheriff’s Posse Made Another Inef fectual Attempt. Douglas, Ga., June 13.—Sheriff Tanner organized another posse of three men and went out again to arrest Mr. E. L. Pick ren, charged with lunacy, and as before, failed to effect the arrest. The posse states that it will be impossible to make the arrest without someone being hurt Mr. T. J. Davis while working in his garden yesterday, was prostrated with heat and is in a critical condition. B. Peterson is moving his stock of goods into his brick store. Just completed Or.
