PLANS FOR UNION DEPOT. HiVB BEE* ASKED FROM A TI M BER OF ARCHITECTS. Conference of Executive Officials of the Four Linei Interented Wax Held ft Short While Ago In New York—lt Wan Determined to Push the Work on—>lr. W. W. .Mackall Back From the Meeting The Houdi Hove Combined in the Pur chase of Hail* for tlie Station anil Its Approaches—Seven or Eight Miles of Track Will Be Needed. The executive officers of the four rail roads concerned in the union station pro ject in Savannah hove determined to push It to a conclusion. This decision was reached in New York a few days ago. A meeting was held at which Mr. YV. \V. Mackall and Vice President and General Manager Cecil Gabbett of the Georgia and Alabama represented that road and the Florida Central and Peninsular. President ftamuel Spencer represented the Southern, as did also Third Vive President F. C. Gannon. The Plant System was represent ed by R. G. Erwin. Mr. Mackall returned yesterday mo,n;n.- from the North. He said some eight archi tects have been invited to submit designs for the station, and that some have al ready responded. By July 15, he consid ers, all the designs will be in .and the roads may then go about making their se lection. Savannah architects were includ ed in the invitation. The entire depot matter will remain in the hands of the executive officers. It will probably be necessary for them to hold other conferences before the actual work on the building can begin. The rights, privileges and concessions desired from the city have been secured, however, and It is probable that no great delays will now be experienced. As satisfactory evidence that the offi cers have no intention of allowing the project to fail through or even lag, it may be stated that the rails for the sta tion and approaches have already been ordered. These represent a considerable expenditure, with prices as they now are. Some or eight miles of track will be necessary. ROASTED RAILROAD MEN. Ticket Agent* Thought Snviinnnh Men Lacking in Hospitality. The International Association of Ticket Agents did not find Savannah’s hospitality extended as bountifully could have been wished, and the representatives of the as sociation, who were through here som> two or three months ago, were very sore because the local railroad men did not ex ert themselves more in the effort to con tribute to the pleasure of their stay. ' James M. Llngle, writing in the ‘The Rail way International Passenger and Ticket Agents’ Journal,” has the following to say about the good time the crowd of excur sionists had in the South: “We returned to Tampa at 5 o’clock in time for dinner and then after Upson, Cadwallader, Frazee and others had bought some pure Havana Tampa cigars, made of Pennsylvania and Virginia to bacco, the train started for its journey north to Savannah. The greater part of our trip between Tampa and Savannah was covered at night. We were due at Savannah at 8 o'clock and breakfast had been ordered for the party at the De Soto Hotel. Our train failed to make schedule time, and the result was a late and poor breakfast at this verv elegant Savannah Hotel. “After our poor breakfast, for which we gave up $1 each, our party spread itself over the city and resorts of Sa vannah. There was a dazzling absence of hospitality in this Southern city, and judging from the dense and multitudinous nowhereness of reception committees, railroad officials and railroad men. the 1. A. T. A. is unknown in Savannah. Our reception was a delightful spectacle in illustration of ‘‘Freedom of the city afforded us a full view of paintless shan ties and when we pleased. A trip on the belt line around the city afforded us a full view of the paintless shanties and negro cabins. A journey to the moss hung home of Savannah's celebrated dead, Bonaventure Cemetery, was a pleasant pastime and in keeping with the spirit of things, as we might as well have sk'pped the city and stopped in Savan nah’s cemetery, as the reception there could not have been any less exuberant and enthusiastic; besides, we might not have expected the dead of Savannah to meet us with open arms. Some of us wandered aimlessly about the city and alongthe wharveson Bay street, and look ed with a feeling of surprise on the ship ping interests of Savannah. Possibly it would have been better for us if we had been seamen and come in on a boat, as the shipping interests seemed to be wide awake and well represented. ‘‘One bright memory remains with a very few of our party who had the pood, fortune to meet that amiable railroad man of Savannah, Mr. Brewer, who constituted himself a committee of one. chartered a trolley car and took the little party of fifteen or twenty down to the pier on board the steamer Grand Ditch* ss and in troduced them to the captain. That litr e party of twenty, out of a total of 275, were the only ones who received any ait iW n in Savannah and Mr. Brewer is the nly one who proved himself n railroad man in this place who considered it w rth while to make an effort to enter an men who were engaged in his own calling. ‘‘We left for Charleston, S. C., and ar rived there t 9 o’clock on the morning of the 16th. In this city which did so much for our soldiers en route to the seat of war. but a few months ago. our recep I>n was very' much the same as that in Sa vannah. Railroad men were not in evi dence. Those who made an effort ’o show us something must evidently have been under the impression that our asso ciation was lient on a philanthropic jour ney and that we were eiger to contribute in the most liberal fashion to new enter prises.” Before the arrival of the ticket agents, two or three of the local railrood men were asked if any steps were to be taken for their entertainment, and the reply was that they knew of none. Time enouga was given, for the notice of their com ing came on ahead, hut the local ticket agentH did not see how they could get up an entertainment for the 2.>0 or more in the party. Action on the matter of the present rate classification was postponed by the di rectors of the Board of Trade yesterday until Wednesday, aj 4 o’clock, on which occasion the railroad officials, members of the board, have been Invited to be pres ent.
