Ihe Professional Contingent Well Represented. y+K York, July 9.—Not much impression was produced on the stock market to-day tn events and the professional contingent, i\hi h conducted practically all the trans itions fell again to very small prooor , tm * The larger volume of dealings and t.K more important operators which char acterized last week's market were not in evidence to-day. T e failure of last week's attempt to at tract outside interest in the market by bid • iinp up prices seems to have been a satis factory demonstration to that element that .ne jicriod i not ripe for active spec ula tion Nevertheless, the price movements ~f the day were quiet, owing to the small Acting supply of stock The undertone • the market, too. was unmistakably •inn, Even tho sharp break in Brooklyn Transit, which stock led the market in point of activity, had very slight effect on the general list, although a f£w large *ain In special stouto* were yielded in empathy with It. Brooklyn Transit at the low point was 5% below the high point. The stocks showed very feeble resistance m the decline and no recuperative power, i r bears apparently ruling the course of the stock a they chose. There was no news to explain the decline, but rumors were prevalent of a poor allowing of earn ings* to lie made in the forthcoming re po i The other local traction stocks were hiso under pressure, Metropllitan selling „i one time 4 points under Saturday,' but rallying J points. Illinois Central rose at one lime 3% and the dealings in the stock wore quite large. Unofficial reports that ill* stock is to go In a 6 per cent basis were responsible for tho rise. Louisville showed good recovery on the authorized announ.•ement that to-morrow's dividend .I*i la rat ion is to be on u 4 per cent yearly Iwsis. The grain-carrying roads were well tak rn all day in anticipation of to-morrow’s monthly crop report, which is expected to ?>how the improved condition from rains in the Northwest. Baltimore and Ohio 4 weak feature on the score of the ii significant increase in gross earnings re port*.! for June. The steel stocks were Inclined to heaviness, Tennessee Coal los > c i points. Tiie movement In the group supposed to be connected with the at temp!v h reach an agreement regarding prices. The large decrease In reserves imvii by Saturday's bank statement re mained unexplained to-day, but the con tinued ' ase of the money market left no room for immediate apprehension on that j* ore It is the more remote periods re garding which doubts are felt, and tend ers hold oui for full rates for time loans suing over for the longer periods, though •.he supply of funds for short periods is abundant. The bond market to-day was dull and rhangos were mostly small and irregular. Total sale?, par value. $650,f*)0. United States new' 4s declined % ami old 4s ud anccd % per cent, in the bid price.
