2 REPORT ON GEORGIA CROPS. WHAT THE WEATHER BI'REAI SAYS OF THE tOM)lTIO!VS. l eather Onrina the Past W eck Somewhat Varieil—Different He portsi W ere Reeel vert—Some ( onn tie* Hart Too >Snt*li. While Other* Had no Rnin-W ork of < lennii*.K Crop* Ha* Been Pu*led—C ondition* of the Several Proiluots. Atlanta. July 17.—The weekly crop re view for Georgia, issued to-' ty bv the Weather Bureau, is as follow.' The weather during th< week just closed has been somewhat varied. Some coun ties have suffered from the effects of too much rain. Others report no rain, though the greater portion of the state conditions have been most favorab.e to general tarm work. The work of cleaning crops ha* been pushed, and much has been accomplished along this line. Cotton, while improved i In many sections, is still small and does ■ not seem to be fruiting well as it should. Wheat threshing is practically completed in most countie.-, and the gen eral yield is much in excess of ear lier an ticipations. There is almost universal complaint of peaches rotting and dropping. Grapes ore said to be good, and in some sections plen tiful. Upland corn is making satisfactory progress, and man> abandoned lowland fields have been rescued and are doing well. Rice, potatoes and cane are very good. Melons are not up to the standard either in quality or quantity. Occasional light showers are needed to mellow up the soil for cultivation. CONDITION OF TUB CROPS. Weather Hureuu Report* Upon t orn. Cotton anil Tohnero. Washington, July 17.—The weather bu reau's weekly summary of crop conditions says: The conditon of corn in Kansas end •Nebraska is less fevorable than in the previous week, and the crop is suffering for rain in portions of Missouri, Southern Ohio. West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina. In Indiana, Illinois and lowa corn has made very favorable progress, and is improved in Kentucky, Tennessee and Pennsylvania. A genernl improvement in the condi tion of cotton is reported, except in Flor ida and Louisiana, but the plant is small and is fruiting slowly in the Central and Eastern Districts, where some field* are etill grassy. In Texas the crop has made good growth, but is very uneven*, and the early planted is fruiting well, ex cept in scattered localities. In Virginia. Tennessee and the Carolina* tobacco is suffering from drought, and is low in the two first named plates. In the Ohio Valley, New England and over the northern portion of the Mid dle Atlantic states, tobacco has mate favorable progress. Further improvement In the condition of spring wheat is reported from Minne sota and North Dakota, and w hile no de cided improvement is reported from North Dakota, the weather conditions in that plate have been propitious. In Minnesota the crop has suffered some damage from local storms. Fair to good yields are ex pected in the extreme southeastern coun ties of South Dakota. HLF.W UP A STORE. F. L. Dnmpi<-r Suffered n I.o<ih to His nuitdjiic ant! Slock. Valdosta, Ga., July 17 —The quiet and peaceful town of Naylor was shaken to its foundation Just a littl • before mid night last right by an explosion which wrought ruin to the store of F. L. Dara • i r. It is not exact'v known whether the ex plosion was from dynamite or gun pow der, though it is very cleat that it oc curred frem the out-ide of the house and was the result of an intention to com pletely destroy- the st-r ard stork of goofs, it is pjtsihe that the house had leer, robbed and that the explosive was u ed to de tioy all trace cf the robbers. The explosion occurred about the time the train from Savannah passed. It was accompanied by a hud r port and shook the eitite community. The citizens who were sleeping were aroused from their slumbers by the report. The building caught on lire but was extinguished. The roof of the building was lifted by t~e force of the explosion and 'hen drop ped with a crash uix>u the counters of the so e caving in completely. Mr. Kami ler carried a Targe stock, which is badly damaged by the crash. There is no theory as to who apt lied (lie explosive to the store, though the officers are al ready investigating the case. CUT IIIS WIFE.. I*r sae and Bloodhounds Started Off in Pursuit of the lirgra, ' Quitman. Ga.. July 17.—Albert Nelms, a young negro, 25 years old. assaulted his wife, Anna, this morning, with a knife. Thp woman’s throat was cut, the wind pipe being nearly severed. She was also cut across the face and head. Nelms also attempted to carve up an old negro man who attempted to keep him from cutting the woman. The Woody affair occurred in the kitch en of Mr. G. W. Avrett, where the woman worked, and was partially witnessed by Mrs. Avrett. Bloodhounds were secured from Mcßee's camp to track Nelms, but owing to the warm weather, the dogs would not do much. A posse will start out with the dogs ag dn to-night, and it is probable that Nelms will he caught. He is known as a bad negro, and is heavily armed. If the officers come up on him, they will probably have trouble in taking him alive. lIISIMiSk MBJ AliaiVING. * Tlm* > Mill \tlrint tin 1 Convention of the Industrial Leaiint. Vtlimtn Colored Employe* Kicked tliout n lliirlal Clinrgr. Atlanta. July 17.—Trouble has arisen over a burial fund in the sanitary depart ment. At the first of the year Chief J. T. Lowry began reserving ten cents a ; tveek from the wages of the employes :r order to accumulate money with which to bury those who might die. Some of the employes, who have not had the good fortune to die. and thus got a large profit on their investment, have registered a kick with the Federation of Trades. The recalcitrants are negroes, numbers of the Labors' Protective Union, which affiliates with the Federation. union hent a delegation before the Fed eration recently, and the latter appointed a committee which now has the matter under advisement. The negroes allege that Chief Lowry has collected $l,lOO, which he has on hand, with the prospect of accumulating a for tune before long. Chief Lowry save the complainants are woefully at sea in re gard to the facts. He denies that he has made the collections regularly, and has produced his book to show the total sum in hie hands has not been more than S3OO. He has paid out all of that and $4.20 more, and so the fund is really in debted to him. Speaking of the com plaints. he said: "I collected less than S2O i week. It is a great deal of bother, and I had about decided to quit it anv way. and told some of the men so the other day. Yesterday, however, seven or eight of them came in here and asked me not to stop it. Those negroes, who are kicking, if there is any kicking, are some of the big. healthy fellows who have no families, and who think they will never die. But if they want it stopped, I'll stop it, and then the dead can bury the dead.” MASONS WILL GATHER. The Atlien* l.oilgf Extend* Ninny In vitation*. Athens, Ga..
