July 21.-A more vigorous pol icy will be inaugurated b> the railroads entering Atlanta against ticket scalping. Officials of the lines recently held u conference, at which it wa> decided that unless the practice ould be aoated they would be forced to discontinue the gran - Ing of so many cheap rates. Atlanta has beer, favored with low rates to ail point® of the country of late Tickets have been •old at one fare or less for the round trip. In many ca?es these tickets are dis posed of to scalpers, who sell them to un suspecting parties County people, es pecially, are purchasers. These people, who. in most cases, have no money left after buying their tickets, begin their journey only to find that they must suffer the humiliation of being pul off the train or pay t.ieir fare. One road • lone. It is said, has put off twenty-one people since last Monday on account of the** tickets. For nearly every train • t the depot there are three or four tick ets turned down by the agents or the conductors W? cause they luave parsed through the hands of s alpers. The roads •re up in arms than now against ticket scalping and instructions have been issued to ail conductors to pay lh# strictest attention possible to tickets which come through their hands. CALLED THEM SCAVENGERS. Rev. Pickett Asked to Discontinue His Scries of Sermons. Atlanta. July 21—R* ause he called the members of the Fifth Baptist -Church ‘Scavengers," Rev. Thaddeus E. Pickett of Cartereville, was asked to discontinue a sfriee of sermons he was delivering at revival mee ings here. Rev. J. C. Solomcn is pastor of the church. La.st Monday he invited Rev. Mr. Pickett to preach each night this week in a series of re\uval meetings projected in the Tabernacle which tne ihurch is using temporarily. Mr. Pickett accepted and preached Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday •nd Thursday nights. Mr. Picke.t abused hie hearers unsj aringly and reached the limit Thursday, so members of the church say, w'hen he called tin m scavengers. Dis content wi h sermons prior to that time merged into open rebellion then, and members of ihe church s ught out the pas tor and asked him to stop Mr. Pickett from preaching. Yesterday morning when the visiting preacher entered the church fo deliver his sermon he was surprised to ttnd the pas tor In the pulpit in the midst of a dis course. Last night he was confronted by the came condition. At the conclusion of the service Mr. Solomon announced that there would he no services in the Taber r.ac.e to-day. Mr. Pi kett ask-d Mr. Solomon to allow him the use of the Tabernacle to-day. To this rtqu.st the pastor replied he did not think it could he done. He said Mr. Pickett must quit preaching in the Tabernacle. Mr Pickett said he would not quit and asked that the matter be brought to a vote of the ongre-ga ion He withdrew re quest before the vote could be taken. 'Mr. Pickett has begun holding services in a t-.nt in another part of the city. TIFTON FILES A COMPLAINT. Allegri Unjust Discrimination in Freight Rates. Atlanta, July 21.—The Mayor and Coun cil of Tifton have tiled a complaint wi:h the Railroad Commissioners, charging discrimination in freight rates on the part of several railroads entering that town end their connections. The petition with the commissioner* states that the Brunswick and Western Railway Company, the Georgia Southern and Florida Railway Company, the Cen tral of Georgia Railway Company, and the Southern Railway Company, have formed a combination against the city of Ttfton, and give the towns of Southwestern Georgia low-er rates on freight. The peti tion allege* rates to and from Atlanta to Tifton, to and from Savannah to Tifton, and to and from Brunswick 10 Tifton, and to and from Columbus to Tifton, are much higher than the rates from the same points to Cordele, Valdosta, Albany, Bainbrldge and other South Georgia towns. The complaint tvas filed by City Attor ney F T. Boatwright, and will come up for hearing before the commissioners on Tuesday, July 24. REQUISITION WAS REFUSED. Got. Candler Did \ot Think Shippey Was a Criminnl. Atlanta. July 21—Gov. Candler refused to honor a requisition of Gov. Johnston of Alabama for the person of N. N. Shippey, a traveling man who was arrested in Columbus several days ago charged with larceny in Jefferson county. Alabama. Attorney Carson of Columbus and Ihe solicitor of the County Court of Jefferson appeared before the Governor to-day at noon and argued the case. After hearing the evidence the Governor decided that there was no case against Shippey and refused to grant the requisition. He also ordered Shippey released. The Governor •avs there was no evidence that the man had committed n crime In Alabama, and if he had committed a crime at all it was done in Georgia. SALE OF THE LEYDEN HOUSE. Famous Vilnnta Structure nought by .1 nines Truitt. Atlanta, July 21.—The Leyden House next door to the Governor's mansion on Peachtree street has been sold to James Truitt of LaGrange for HO,WO. It was built In 1840. Dr. W. H. Leyden, who owned the prop erty during his lifetime, invented a rotary lock in one of the rooms of the house. The lock was accepted by the government as one of the best registry locks extant. It Is now In use on all United States reg istered mail pouches and is known us the Leyden lock. The Snow property, corner Peachtree and Howard streets, was given in part payment for the Leyden place. The value of the Snow property was fixed at s2o,Out) in the trade. CANDLER TALKS ON CHINA.
