Yachting along th*- • fishing on the river, en tertaining in town, and supping out of town, man just now* is proving his title clear to rule in society, for woman has fled to cooler realms. Mr. and Mrs, Rauers. Miss Kate Rauers and Miss Freda Rauers have been enter taining a house party in which were Mr. end Mrs Lewis Has kell, Mr. and Mrs. James T. Dent and Miss Mary Comer, and for the past fortnight St. Catharine s has been the loadstar of attraction to all the gay mariners cruising along the coast. The charms of young society to he found at the island have drawn these wandering yachtsmen from afar, and even the de lights of boating have failed before pleas ures on shore, while fish breakfasts and suppers and gayety of all sorts have been Che order of the summer hour. In town just at present all society interest is gathering in pleasant anticipation about the wedding of Miss Mary Haines and Mr. Hubert Duckworth, which wiil take place Wednesday at high noon. After the - mony Mrs. Haines will entertain the bridal party informally, hut there will be no re ception, Mr. and Mrs. Duckworth leaving almost immediately for New York, from where they will sail this week for Europe. Miss Haines and Mr. Duckworth were entertained by Mr. and Mrs. < arleton C. Champion at a charming little supper party Tuesday evening. The oiher guests were Miss Annie Haines and Mr. Walter Battersby Duckw r orth. Mr. Duckworth gave a beautiful din ner at the De Soto last evening to the gentlemen who will be his attendants at the wedding. His guests were Mr. W. B. Duckworth, Mr. E. O. Watkins, Mr. Horace Hunter. Mr. Edward Demere, Mr. Clarence S. Connerat, Jr., Mr. Mack Cor bett. Mr. G. Noble Jones, Mr. Charles C. Schley, Jr., Mr. Lewis Warfield, Mr. Henry Walthour. Mr. A. M. West, Jr., and Mr. G. E. Dickinson. Miss Mary Comer, accompanied by Miss Kate Rauers end Miss Freda Rauers, have returned from St. Catherine’s. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Postcll are spend ing some weeks very delightfully at Blow ing Rock. Miss Carrie Lou Meldrim will arrive this week to visit Miss Jeanie Haines. The engagement of Miss Helen Buck man of Philadelphia and Mr. Henry Wal thour has been recently announced. Miss Buckman is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Buckman of Philadelphia, and the niece of Mr. and Mrs. George T. Cann. Mr. and Mrs. Clark Howell arrived Wednesday afternoon at Southampton. Miss Clifford Munnerlyn, Miss Jeanie Haim*. Mips Rifchton Habersham and Mr. David Barrow formed a plea sunt driving party to White Bluff in the early part of the week to spend the day with Mrs W. W. Chisholm and the Misses Chis holm. Mr. and Mrs. William G. Morrell and their family will leave to-morrow for Lake Mohonk, where they win remain um til the fall. Mr. and Mrs. Cooper Myers, Miss Caro line Myens and Master Jack Myers, after spending July very delightfully at Hotel Tybee. will return home to-morrow. Mr. Her.ry D. For the past three weeks they have been traveling through the old historical towns of England, visiting Ox ford. Rugby, Stratford-on-Avon end East* bourne, and spending several days at that fashionable resort of English nobility and royalty. Brighton. They are now in Pari.-;, where they will devote about ten days to the exposition. During August they will visit n.l the. most interesting places on the continent, uni returning, will sail on the twenfy-ninth from Liverpool. Mr. Thomas S. Wylly will leave this week for New York. Miss Carrie Lou Meldrim will arrive this wide to visit Miss Jeanie Haines. Mr. and Mrs. James T. Dent returned Friday from a visit to Mr. and Mrs. Rauers at St. Catharine's. Monday evening at Hotel Tybee, a small but delightful progressive euchre party was given, at which the- ladies’ prize wan won by Mrs. Arthur Weil, and the gentle men’s by Mr. Spitz of Atlanta. The other players were Mr. and Mrs. Riddle of Mo bile, Mrs. Jacob Lippman, Mrs. Joseph Ferst, Mrs. S. A. Einstein, Mrs. Lawrence Lippman, Miss Lily Hirsch of Columbus, Miss Hazel Hirsch and Maj. Francis Hill of New Orleans. Mr. Julian Clark has just returned from England. Miss Baker is visiting Miss Rosa Mcßee in Ghent, Va. Miss Emelyn Hartridge, after a visit of a few days to Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Hart ridge in New York, is now at Jewett Heights in the Catskill Mountains, where she will spend the month of August. Miss Lily Anderson returned Monday from a visit to Miss Lina Huger in Bluff ton. Mr. and Mrs. Wright Hunter, Master Harold Hunter, and Master John Hunter, will go North to-morrow to spend some weeks at Mountain Rest, near Lake Mo honk. They will make a short stay in New York before returning in the autumn. Miss Sallie McAlpin will sail to-morrow on the City of Augusta for New York, from where she will go direct to the Thou aand’lslands to visit Mr. and Mrs, E. P, Wilbur at their summer home, Sport Isl and, Alexandria bay. Mrs. Clarence G. Anderson and Miss Madgie Reid will leave this week to spend August and September in the mountains. Miss Smith of Maron Is visiting her sis ter, Mrs. Hampton L. Eerrill. Miss Eula Gamble and Miss Angle Cub bedge went out to Isle of Hope Friday to spend a week with Mrs. J. A. G. Carson. Miss Sally Haskell returned Wednesday from a visit to Miss I.lna Huger in Bluff ton. Mr. William P. Carmichael and Miss Mary Carmichael will go to North Caro lina Wednesday for the remainder of the summer. Miss Jeanie Haines went out to White Bluff Wednesday to visit Miss Eliza Chis holm. Mr. Ormond Strong and Mr. Sidney Stubbs left Tuesday night for Highlands, N. C., where, with Mr. Strongs able as sistance, Mr. Stubbs will pursue his col lege studies during the summer. Mrs. Arden Is visiting her sister, Mrs. A. C. McAlpin, at her home in Bluffton. Mr. and Mrs. Charles S. Wood are in Sullivan county, New York. Dr. H. H. Martin, Mr. Thomas S. Miss Nina Crane, left Monday for Lake George, where she will spend several weeks. Mr. Louis Warfield has returned from a visit to Mr. and Mrs. Rauers, at St. Cath arine’s. Miss Phoebe Elliott and Mr. 8 Elliott will sail In August for Europe to visit the Paris Exposition. Mr. T. Lewis Malone, who is spending a month In Charlottesville with Mrs. Malone will return about the middle of August. Mrs. W. G. Cann and children left Thursday evening for Saluda, where they will stay for the rest of the summer. Mrs. T. S. Wayne and Miss Mary Wayne are spending the season, very delightfully in North Halley, Canada. Mr. Frank Holland arrived Thursday to make a visit of several days in the city. The Barbecue Club has recently held its annual reorganization meeting, giv ing the first of its deiightful entertain ments this week at the old water works. Mr. John Carswell is the secretary of the club, and among Its other members are Mr. W. W. Starr. Mr. Hal Bacon, Mr. George Gadsden, Mr. Merritt W. Dixon, and Mr. James M. Dixon. Mr. C. C. Schley, Jr., who has been' pursuing a course of study at Poughkeep-~ sic, for the past two months, returned home Monday. Mrs. Edward Barnwell was In Bluffton several days during the week, as the guest of Mrs. Joseph Huger. Mr. E. W. Smith, who has been stay ing at Hotel Tybee for tie past fortnight, will sail for New' York to-morrow, on his way to Saratoga for the month of August. Mr. Louis Morgan has recently accepted a position in New York, where he will now make his home. His friends here, while rejoicing in his success, regret very much his departure from Savannah. Miss George Ashley of Trenton, S* C., and Miss Gretta Holmes of Charleston, who have been guests of the Miss Runs hart at White Bluff, have returned home. Mr. and* Mrs. Chestnutt and Miss Con stance Chestnutt have returned from a pleasant stay of several weeks at Tybee. Mr. E. A. Cutts left Monday for Sara toga. where Mrs. Cutts and Mr. Walker Cutts have been staying since the middle of June. Mr. Harold von Linstow, who Ii is re cently returned from his summer trip to Europe, is expected in Savannah to-mor row to spend a few days among his friends here before he goes to Dallas. Miss Bessie Haile of Gainesville, Fla., will arrive Wednesday to visit Miss Ro berta Purse. Wednesday evening, from 5 to 10, a de lightful garden party was given at the Episcopal residence by the Aid Society of the Cathedral. The afternoon was devoted to the children, and these little folks had as merry a lime as possible, with good things to eat and pleasant games to play. In the evening the garden presented a very pretty sight, with its swaying rows of Japanese lanterns lighting up bright groups of summer-clad figures scattered about at Inviting little tables or wander ing in twos and threes over the lawn. Refreshments were served by Miss Bell, Miss Alice Collins, Miss Katie O’Connor, Miss Annie Gody and Miss Delanoy, while delightful music was furnished by Miss Julia Boyle and Miss Stella Gallagher on the guitar, and Miss Fannie Rourke on the mandolin.
