2 LEGAL BATTLE OVER TAXES. QIESTIOY OF IH;\I)U( \RTERB OF SOUTHERN EXPRESS CO. Jt Is Held Thn t the Headquarter* llavo Never Been Mov 'd From %u -- j£imt and an Kftort Will lie Madi* by Rlcli. ind i onnty to C ollect Hack Tnxea for Twenty-two Venn*. ClmrKed That tlie Company Made Improper Itcturns. Atlanta, Aug 4.—A great legal battle over back taxes for twenty-two years, amounting, it is said, to over $60,000, is in prospect between the authorities of Rich mond county and the Southern Express Company. This wili probably be the outcome of the recent decision of the Supreme Court rela tive to corporation taxes. Judge William F. Eve of Augusta, com missioner of roads and revenue for Rich mond county, has been taking the matter in hand. Comptroller Gen. Wright was asked about the matter, and to-day se cured an opinion from Attorney Gen. Ter rell to the effect that the express com pany is liable for the taxes claimed by Richmond county. Acting on this advice, Judge Eve will probably proceed at once against the cori>oration. The company has paid the taxes on its gross earnings under a recent decision of the Supreme Court, but the county claims that taxes are also due on the personal property of the company, as the head quarters are supposed to be in Augusta. The headquarters of the Southern Express Company were moved to t’hattanooga sev eral months ago, but Judge Eve contends that the move was only a technical one and that the money of the company and most of its property are in Augusta. The express company did not make the proper returns, so it is claimed, and for that reason the trouble has arisen. The express company says that Its bonds and other ‘■ecuriiies are on deposit in New York, while tne headquarters are not in Augusta, and for that reason it is not due to pay the amount assessed by the county. The question seems to rest on the location of the headquarters, and from present indications it looks as if the court will determine that point. COfyQI ITT COUNTY’S GROWTH. Large Gain In Tax Return*—Big In crease In Popnlation. Moultrie, Ga., Aug. 4.—The consolidation of tax returns* shows that the gain in taxable property in the county for this year was $431,450. a gain of 32 per cent. The percentage of increase will probably be greater in the county than in Moul trie. The Increase in population by present census, will probably be nearly, or quite 300 per cent, over the last census; the census of 1890 gave the population some thing lower than 4.000, while the present census will, in ail probability, show near ly 14,000. It is quite probable that there will be no county in the state chat will show a greater percentage of increase. A public barbecue will be given by the business men of Moultrie on Aug. 16. There will be a number of very pleasant features. All the adjoining town will be invited. The creditors of Lee ft Ferguson. who were formerly in business near here, met at Bainbridge last Monday, and elected Mr. M. J. Pearsall trustee of the estate. DEATH FROM POISONOUS WEED. She complained of pains in the chest and throat, which were sw lien. Finally she remembered the ride in rhe country and told the surgeons. They then pronounced the malndv due to the poisonous weed.
