New York. Ah* 11.—Except for rime
rather active rolling of Sugar and Peo
ple's Gas there was not a particle of an
imation In to-day's stock market. The
sympathetic effect of the weakness ol
these two specialties wiped out the slight
opening gains In some of the Internation
al railroad stocks.
Again at the close there was sufficient
demand from the short interests, which
was averse to leaving contracts uncov
et ed over the three day* holiday, to stif
fen the prices of some of the railroads,
hut the general lone was easy, owing to
a late drive against People's Oar. Among
those to show a notable firmness were
Southern Pacific. New York Central and
Ualtitnore and Ohio. The weakness of
People's Gas gave a striking Illustration
of the lack of consistency In the mind*
of professional operators. The other day
this stock advanced on the report that
a newly organised company In Chl-wgo

of the People's. The stock was accord

From Ihe Chicago Chronicle
The larantuln and ihe horrred Irml live
In the same climate. They are usually
on good terms, but once In a while trouble
comes beiween them and then there Is a
due) to Ihe death. A witness to a recent
tight between these rare anlr.ials describe*
the unusual sight vtvldly, thus:
"In tha early summer, while herding a
hunch of caille In Ihe northern panhandle
of Texas, I wa* allilng on my pony about
* Indolent a* could !• when a strong
aernt of formic add was whiffed on the
wind lo me A few feet away was a
large bed of anla, In which a horned toad
sat bushy engaged at a, meal of the ant
people. The toad paid but little attention
10 Ihe attack* made upon him but nta
away as though he had been with Dr Tan
ner on a forty-day fast and had Just ar
rived at ltelmonlco'a.
"Presently a large brown tnrantnla
came leaping toward the ant led. as
though frightened. He halted a momeni
by the load Bach looked nt ffie oilier ns
though some apology should la' made The
load was the first lo take offense and de
mand a reckoning. Ha ran ai the taran
tula with open mouth The great spider
leaped Into Ihe air ahoul a foot and de
scended upon ibe toad’s head, blllng him
over Ihe eye. A strange little cry of
l>ain rams from the horny duelist. The
ha 1 tie was on In earnest.
"The bite made the toad alck and for an
Instant he halted aa If he were dased. A
little distance from the ant bed a email
tongue cactus was growing The toad ran
to It and began sucking the Jute* (rum a
wound made in tha thick leaf. Then he re
turned lo the conflict with renewed ener
gy. The tarantula lost a limb In the on
set.
"A third time was Ihe duel renewed. The
tarantula lost another limb Beady/drops
of a viscid liquid stood on Ihe tips of tho
load's horn*. The leap* Into the air were
not repeated by Ihe tarantula, but wheth
er It was on account of ibe loss of limbs
or the poison-Upped horn* of Ihe toad can
never Ira known. Each stood facing the
other some seconds as though seeking an
advantage. During the armistice the ant*
set about Inflicting a few wounds on the
flat stomach of the tarantula and the toed.
Neither seemed to care now for the bha#
of the ants, but eyed each other with a
fiercene>- more lhan human. In an un
guarded moment the tarantula leaped for
ward and Inflicted a wound upon the lip
of Ihe toad.
"The struggle continued. Half of the legs
were cui from Ihe l<ody of tha tarantula.
The poor cripple seetneil loet. hut some
how be dosed In on the load god sailed
Its underlip and killed him,"
