New York. Ah* 11.—Except for rime rather active rolling of Sugar and Peo ple's Gas there was not a particle of an imation In to-day's stock market. The sympathetic effect of the weakness ol these two specialties wiped out the slight opening gains In some of the Internation al railroad stocks. Again at the close there was sufficient demand from the short interests, which was averse to leaving contracts uncov et ed over the three day* holiday, to stif fen the prices of some of the railroads, hut the general lone was easy, owing to a late drive against People's Oar. Among those to show a notable firmness were Southern Pacific. New York Central and Ualtitnore and Ohio. The weakness of People's Gas gave a striking Illustration of the lack of consistency In the mind* of professional operators. The other day this stock advanced on the report that a newly organised company In Chl-wgo "as In control of Interest* friendly to People s Gas The professional Intelli gence by to-day had arrived at the con* ■ iuslon that the formation of this friend ly company must be the signal for war upon the Ogden Gas Company, the rival of the People's. The movement in Sugar wa* about equally Independent of Ihe news of Ihe day and was appoiently due •o realising on the advance tn the refined *lu< t which wa made yesterdav The port taken by the professional ele ment was based on scrutiny of the source of the orders In the stock, and when the trader* thought they ooutd trace some selling orders to Inside sources they trailed on and sold.
