Robert Van Deventer preached yesterday at the Huffy Street Baptist Church the opening sermon of hi* pas torate Hl* subject was "The Friend ship of Christ," and he drew hi* text for tt from Matthew Ch. 11:1: "The son of man came eating and drinking, and they say. Behold a map gluttonous and a wtne blbber, a friend of publicans and sinners But WiMkxn Is justified of her children,'' The friendship of Christ, said Mr. Van- Deventer. was one of hi* most noticeable characteristic*. In It he tower* so far above the other men of his time that he Incurred their enmity. This friendship differs from that of John Jesus sought the people, while John allowed the peo ple to seek him in the wilderness. Of the beauties of thl* friendship hi* warm attachment to lit* friends In Bethany, the ilosenes* of the relation that he bore lo many of the disciples bear witness "Jesus' friendship, tne minister *a.. was an unselfish and therefore an Ideal one. He took upon himself the form of sinful man. and through so doing, trained shuttle, suffering, poverty, and other I.ls, yet he realised the Ideal friendship of Ihe (effect man. and that was Just what the world needed. The wotld %** watt ing for such a man. one who loved It for It* own goal and Hki for hi* own "The general hies of friendship to-day I* opposed to that exemplified In Ihe life of the Saviour. Now we want moro tiiau. we are willing to give In return. Not so with Jesus; he asked for friendship and loyally, but gave in return hie whole heart, and to-day this 1* the kind ot friendship that he offers to the whole world. • "One of the most marked way* In which this friendship for the world was shown Is In the Interest that he manifested In the problems of the day. and particular ly In the social problem and the condition of women. By his consideration of this problem and his treatment of women, he made her. who before was man’s slave, hla equal. "Again. In the business life of the day. Jesus showed His friendship and love for humanity. He chose to be born a poor man and to earn Ills bread by the sweat of His brow To-day tt ought not be thought a misfortune to share the fate of Jesus, but. unfortunately, the spirit of labor to-day Is pessimistic. Instead of the hrrolc writ It manifest'd in the ‘Cot tar's Saturday night,' we have the spirit shown In The Man With the Hoc ' ’I am glad." said the speaker, "that Christ ha* given ns such a conception of work, for In so doing. He ha* proved Himself no* only unselfish, hut philanthropic In putting Into life the contentment of living and being." Christ a work a* a teacher, continued Mr Van Deventer, was always done with Ihe object of calling out tn men that sim ple manhood that he so well exemplified and whlrh Is the concept lan of manhood that should he Inrulooted by all of the churches. In his search for this quality, hr confine himself to neither the rich lor the poor, but took It where he found It. The Idea that the disciple* were chosen on ac count of their poverty and that thereby Christ forever afterward put a premium on poverty Is an erroneous one, tits friend* and dlscloles were chosen for their man hood and He took them where He found them, no matter In what walk of life. "Anti as Christ did so should we. I>xi u* choose out from our churches for thrlr leaders, those men nod women ivlto have the strength and character to he our leaders." In concluding, the speaker warned 'it hearer* that the church ws* not merely s social body, nor yet a philosophical cluh. and thot the members should devote their live* at all times, whether in work or amusement, to that form of work or pleasure that would tend to the develop ment of the higher and nobler qualities, that would make them approach nearer Ihe Idea! life, character, and friend*.lip of Jesus. During the afternoon, after Sunday School. Rev. Van Deventer received u number of the memhors of the congrega tion. To-morrow night he will have a recep tion at the church, at which he will men not only all of hi* congregation, hut th members of other rhurrhes, and the gen eral public as well. Ita44ar44ypla Coutrnreray. Editor Morning News—l have read "Mr Apple s Side of l(," and In Justice to the Provident Savings Mfe Insurance Com pany and myself I cannot allow his many statements which are In error to paea. 1 called at Mr. Apple's office once pre vious to the day of our difficulty, to put him on notice that his method of compe tition, which I considered unfair, must stop. (Three other Idie Agents hove told me they have found It necessary lo take the same action with Mr. Apple.) At that time he aaked me to read the report of the Insurance commissioner of Massachusetts. Mr Apple stale.! that this commissioner censures In no 'uncertain terms some of the plans of the Provident Savings. This commissioner never crtllciaed any of the plans of the Provident Savings, as Mr Apple states. It was only a matter of how the first year's premiums should be classified, of which he spoke. When a company (an okl line company) makes a rate It must have—and eel aside —an amount required and specified by law which t* sufficient to carry out the con tract as specified for that rate. All rates are subject to the scrutiny of the Board of American Actuaries, after being com piled by the company's actuaries; and Mr. Apple makes a great mistake In placing his opinion as to the adequacy of a rale against such eminent authority, ba.-k.vl by a company like the Provident Savings. Had the rale beer, too low we would have learned same some twenty years ago. be fore Mr. Apple rose In the Insurance world lo Inform ua. Had Mr. Apple claimed the rate was too high for what was of fered he would have been more readily believed. (There Is a margin In this par ticular rate which (or years past lias shown a handsome dividend.) But the trouble Bea In the fact that the rate under discussion Is a little cheaper than Mr Apple can offer himself "Nuf sed.” As lo Mr. Apple'* use of the paper weight, he took same In hand some moments be fore our encounter, and I told him twice to put It down. He struck me four times on the head with the weight and also was on top of me and siruck roe after I was down, all of which, though he denies. I have wltneese* lo prove. My head did not strike the desk or anything else, and Mr Apple did not kick me out; or so far aa I know, klflt at me even. He called "Po lice!" "Police!" and one of his clerks went for a police and ahortly after 1 was up and wearing out the remains of an urn biella on Mr Apple, the police Interfered. Mr Apple, after !h police had me tn charge, appeared very anxious to with draw hi# request for my arrest. (If I would be taken from the office), aa un doubtedly his case would ahow up very ooorl) before the public. I do not think I "forgot what was due one gentleman from another" when I told Mr Apple |o remove his glasses. It ap pear*. however. I was mistaken In the gt-nth-man Mr Apple "naturally In ferred" that I was armed—why I do not know egeept as an excuse for his us of the paper weight. He forgets that all men are not constituted like himself. 1 was willing to meet him wlihout arms and did so. Mr Appla waa the one who waa armed. Bdw. 8. Stoddard. Sept X.
