Th# Morning N< wa Ofllc*. Saturday, Sept 22. The feature of the markets to-day was the weakness which developed In the na vsl stores sltustlon during the closing hours. Spirits turpentine closed Arm at *7 cents, but la understood to have sold off a half cent later. Rosins closed quiet end unchanged, and are said to have sold 6 cante off on H and below. The weakm-ss was due to the backwardness of export era about taking stuff at the market price, and rhelr ablilty to hammer the market by reason of the fact that their demand were not apparently of an urgent nature The cotton market efoeed easy and stead ier. with aales on the spot light. During the day there were reports of a storm In Texas and grossly exaggerated accounts of the damage caused thereby, with some of the estimates putting the loss at 2.t8),- 009 hales. After a Hon of Active Trading the Market I loses Weak. New York. Sept. *2.—Storks weakened afresh to-day and after two hours of ao ■ five trading the market closed a, live and weak, except for the Irregularity caused by shorts buying lo cover In some of Ihe stocks which bad hern most severely sold by the M ars. Only In Tennessee Coal was the rally as much as a point, leaving a net lose of 2 points In that stock. The coalers, the hlgh-prbcil specialties and the steel stocks, except the steel rail-mak ers. show Ihe heawlest losses. The rkulng and bloodshed In the anthra cite mining region had a deprewslng In fluence on the whole list, and Reading Is sue* were spei tally affe xed on account of the hoi** that has been Indulged that Its mines would not tie shut down, which Is disappoint* 1 by yesterday's cessation of work in that company's shafts. The light buying for Loudon account was entirely disregarded and the slight demand from bargain hunters, which made Its appearance h r<- and there, was with out any Influence In checking Ihe liquida tion The railroad group did not escape the prevailing weakness and standard railroad stocks were as much depressed ns stocks of minor roads. There were ex amples of a base of a point or over In the trunk liner, the Southern group, the Soulhwesterns, the Grangers and Ihe Pa i itlcs, Baltimore and Ohio, and lulsvllle and Nashville were most chnspkuous for weakness The hank statement seemed to precipi tate renewed selling, although It was no w-aker than had been expected anil In the decrease In loans was rather hotter. The loan contraction show* th# extent thai genuine liquid a lion had been going on In the stock market during the week. It seem* elso that the remittances In pay ment of the German loan, which stiffened the exchange market early In the week, were arranged without recourse to Ihe local money market. The movement of gold from the Hank of Flngiand to Ger many coupled with the heavy Interior demand* for currency, strengthened ihe ronvMlon that considerably higher rate* in money are Inevitable.
