A record for admissions to Ihe while public school* of the city wu* established yesterday, when ranis were given out ut Chatham Academy to MO children. In fact, there jure a few more than that num ber, which does not include those admit ted to the High School, of whom there were several. High School pupil* usually have their card*, and It Is In but few cases that it Is necessary to give them Children and parents began to gather at the a.uderoy before 9 o'clock. It was from that hour until 1 that card* were to be given out, ami there was a host on h ind to receive them. It became necessary for many to wait longer than they desired because of the great mass that wanted cards, but the delay was unavoidable, be lug due, principally, to the fuel that many of the children had not been vaccinated, though enough had been advertised about vaccination to make it clear that the op eration was a requirement for admission to the schools. Borne 100 children had to be vaccinated by Health Officer W. P. Brunner and the three assistants who wore with him to represent the city. Had attention been given Ihe matter of vaccination hy t*r tetts before, there would have been no occasion for such delay, as It was the operation that Impeded Ihe machinery of the pi|n arranged by Superintendent Otis Aahmore for the examination of appli cants and the Is-uance of cards. The principals of the several schools were at desks lu rooms of the High School building, and It was to them that the applicant* for admission to the re spective schools applied after having shown satisfactory evidence of site, --fir vaccination to the physic.ans or having been vaccinated by them. In cases where children were vaccinated by the attend ing physicians, they were given card* marked “Vaccinated," but tinged with red. which meant that the principal*, on issuing cards of admltqjon. were to make a note of the child a* having Perm vac cinated that day. so that he might be watched for the eff-ct. One of the principal* succeeded In com pletely tilling up a school. Henry Street School has not a single vacancy. In all, 208 vacancies remain, divided among the school* ns follows: Anderson. 42; Henry, 0; Ma*s!e, 30; Hnrnard. 9; fTuilham No. 1. 192; Chatham No. 2. 14; Cathedral, 2. and Si. I*Bl rick's. 7. To-day and to-morrow cards will be sup plied ai the same hours. It Is believed • here will be less of H rush than there was yesterday, as most of the vacancies have been filled. There will be more than enough applicants to-day and 10-raorrow to fill those that remain, and many will have to be put upon the sit|>erlntendent's waiting list In ord> r that thev may Ih> given admissions to the grades they desire to enter In the same order in which they apply when vacancies, front one cause or another, occur during the term. Mr. Ashmore expect* a number of va. cuticle# to appear upon the reopening of the school* on Monday. The children who w< re upon the roll* at Ihe ek*A of la-t term have pile** reserved for them, but It I* not known thai the> will all return. On the contrary, it I* probable that tin r will be a number who do not re-enter. In which event their places will be given to those whose name* are fir*! on the w tiling list. A distinct advantage. ther> - fore, will b enjoyed bv Ihose who- it -me. are high up on ih<* list. Card* of admission were i-sued during the morning to the colored children at the Hast and the West Broad street seho.l*. Work of organisation continued until 1!. when the pupils were dismissed for the tiny. The same hour* will be observed to-day and to-morrow, and Monday tin regular • hoot schedule will l>e entered upon. The fttstcr* were very well satisfied with ttte attendance u|ioi the opening day They expert It will be Increased to-dHV and to morrow, a* It b< usually the ease at the opening of term that many children do not appear the first lay.
