New York. Bept. 28—The slock marked
was more feverish and Irregular 40-dny
than for months. The movement of prices
was very wide and the dealings were on
a large scale, but the actlqp of (he mar
ket indicated that It was being Rested by
professional operators.
The rally which set In the first of the
week seemed to have culminated during
the morning and the over-enthusiastic
bulls who attempted to bid up prices
ogalnat the outstanding short account
found themselves burdened with increas
ing offering* to realise Instead of driving
•he shorts to cover They therefore al
lowed prices to drop buck and the market
fell into dullneas at about laet night’s
level. The hear party apparently made up
the.r minds that the elimination of Ihe
short Interest* had so far weakened the
technical position of the market as to
warrant a fresh Inroad upon prices.
The rttkl was conducted with determina
tion and showed th* command of large
resource*. Northern Baclflc was singled
out as the special object of attack on ac
count of Prel<len' Mellen’s assertion In
Ihe annual report that the prospect* of
business are not so bright for the coming
year owing to the spring wheat shortage
Practically the same commentary was
contained In Ihe annual report of Presi
dent Hill of the Great Northern published
during the dsy. Northern Pacific had
failed to share In the early strength, nnrt
although there were other stocks which
covered a wide range on the down grade
Northern Padflc fell farthest below last
night's level of th* railroad group. The
selling of Northern Pacific was supple
mented by pressure against Missouri Ps
rlflc. as there are supposed to be large
long account* existing in that stock. The
raid was successful tn dislodging stop
loss orders and the whole market fell
away with some violence Moat of the
leading stock* were a point or more ha
low last night's level before the decline
culminated. The early advance had shown
gain* of a point for many stocks The
nervous condition of the bear* wa* strik
ingly shown In the violent recovery of the
last half hour of the markef, when a ru
mor got Into circulation that the strike of
coal miners had been settled This rumor
was attributed to Chicago, and though th*
prompt measures taken to secure authori
tative Information on the point failed to
confirm It. he hears bought stock* to cov

The covering movement extended

only to one mine where peculiar condition*
exist did not become known until after

conjecture again as to whether relief to
