New York. Ort, 12 —The undertone of
the stock market became strong to-day
and prices moved upward pretty consis
tently to the close, which was strong, hut
notably dull and with gam* well main
tained The dominant factor In the mar-'
ket was the large engagement of gold for
import, London. Paris ar.d Berlin all con
tributing. the total amounting to 92 7M> *
non The dealing* In ato, h* were not large
at any time and the day's operation* were
attributed to professional operators for the
most part
There was a fair distribution of the
strength, but the effective dealing* dur
ing the day were concentrated In a few
stock* and those distlngulehed for the re
cent large short selling from whleh they
have suffered People's Gas was the nota
ble example In the Industrial department
The stock sold off after the opening on
the presumption that yesterday's buying
had satisfied the demand from the short*,
hut the large covering at the decline caus
ed a renewed advance ar.d It wa* lifted
at one time an extreme *54. closing with
a net gain of I*4.
In the railroad list Northern raolflc was
In largest demand on buying supposed to
he for Inside Interest But the large short
Interest played ar. apt part In the day's
advance, which reported 254. with the net
gain It, Notsrlthstanding the notable
dullness at the last, the closing we# strong
and gains were well maintained
The failure of the monev rate to re
spond to the operations on the stork mar
ket gave color to the supposition that they
were conducted bv professional operator*
who had supplied themwelves wrtth time
loan* with a view to such a contingency
na the present. The call loan rate, In
fact, was Inclined to eag. the ruling rate
declining to 3 per rent., notwithstanding
that loans made to-day carry over until
Monday.
The further drastic contraction In cash
reserve* of the hanks. Indicated hy tha
preliminary estimates, failed to harden
the money rate. Apparently the bank*
have Inst during the week upward of 19 -
OW.ono. or about as much a last week
This would effectually wipe out the re
maining surplus of the banks, unless the
reserve requirements have been consider
ably reduced. The action of the monev
market to-day Indicates that this must be
the cese and promises a showing of a
considerable loan contraction. Them wa*
also some relaxation In the Interior de
mand for currency. The bond market
wa* quiet and changea were unimportant.
