New- York. Oct. 17 —Murphy & Cos. say:
While there was an evident resistance
to pressure in the cotton market yeeter
• tuv, the reactionary tendency appeared
more pronounced this morning when
price* opened about twenty point* higher
than last night's close. For the moment,
at least, fear of froet*. has Induced suffi
cient buying to absorb liquidation soles
and cotton offering* In the South. With
the abort interest Increased and the long
Interest materially lessened by the de
cline of a cent pound. Ihe situation ts
entitled to greater steadiness Irrespective
of the future course of prices. As far as
the crop movement la concerned cotton
I* being marketed Just as rapidly now as
last week, and the amount in sight is
expected to reach the largest total of
the season. The tendency to look for a
larger crop than heretofore, owing to
the tardy frosts, continues to Influence
sentiment, and holders are more incline,]
10 sell on an advance than anticipate a
deckled upward movement at this season
of the year Keveral million hales of cot
ton have yet to he marketed, and for the
time being prices are sufficiently templing
to Induce a free movement.
While the speculative public Is no more
Inclined to Invest In cotton now than
some weeks ago. the consumer Is taking
advantage of the decline to purchase part
of the necessary supplies. For the com
ing fsw weeks the market will be Influ
enced not only by the rush to sell cotton
In the South, hut by the moderate buying
of tlomesitc consumers. But many re.
gar*! this combination of factors os more
likely to Induce artificial depression than
bring aljut .1 is-iraanmi decline in prices.

New York. Oct. 17 —Some continued ef

the bull forces were considerably deplet

Yesterday's market fairly demonstrated
that the outstanding short Interest had
been reduced to such proportions a* to
make their demand Ineffective In continu

There was sufficient show of strength In
